Just a couple weeks ago I posted this epic guidance: “8 Ways to Debunk Wellness and Health Promotion Research Papers.” It obviously rocked the world of the scientific health-publishing community.

Since then, editorial review boards of respected research journals in the population and workplace-health fields have called emergency meetings. The boards admitted a need for more diligence in evaluating article submissions, and then improving objective, peer-review standards prior to publication. My phone is ringing off the hook. HA! NOT!!

In fact, the Journal of Environmental and Occupational Medicine (JOEM) just published an article titled, “Does Whale Oil Illuminate Darkness Effectively?” Well, that wasn’t exactly the title. But it was close. It was actually, “Do Workplace Health Promotion (Wellness) Programs Work?” The article manages to include most of my eight warning signs for being invalid.

My colleague (defined as another person who knows the lyrics for the great tunes of the 60s and 70s) Jon Robison, PhD (see note below) just asked 13 questions about the JOEM paper of the lead author, which I think should be answered.

The reference to “the parallel universe” means that the conclusions Goetzel and company came up with have no relation to our known laws of science. The conclusions are not of this earth. In essence, you have to suspend reality to accept Goetzel’s claims. That’s a fair criticism.

Al Lewis, PhD, and Vik Khanna, have been calling Dr. Goetzel on these issues for years. If you haven’t read Lewis and Khanna’s book, “Surviving Workplace Wellness, With Your Dignity, Finances and (Major) Organs Intact,” you should if you’re working in workplace wellness or health promotion. And of course, don’t miss the most in-depth (and sometimes scathing) review of that work, which I bravely posted, “Al Lewis and Vik Khanna criticized me in their new book, Surviving Workplace Wellness. And now my life is over.”

Khanna (once again) took exception to Goetzel’s JOEM paper in his post, “Do Workplace Health Promotion Wellness Programs Work?: Ron Goetzel’s circularity.” Lewis makes a comment on Khanna’s blog opening with the statement, “It might be nice if Mr. Goetzel actually responded for a change.” Indeed.

What You As a Wellness or Health-Promotion Professional Should Do

Often employers and some brokers are unknowingly complicit in allowing these invasive and ineffective wellness programs into workplaces. Workplace wellness as it’s currently practiced is starting to be challenged by mainstream media and the weakness of the concept is becoming more widely understood.

And not too long ago I published, “5 Questions That Will Make Your Wellness Vendors Think They’re Having a Bad Nightmare… A Workplace-Wellness Critique.”

I don’t suggest an anti-wellness movement. But the entire paradigm, our thinking about it, and new solutions are needed. There are a lot of good people out there with better ideas based on common sense and sound science. That’s why I remain optimistic that workplace wellness can transition, change, and evolve into a meaningful and effective way to help people enjoy their careers and to be healthier. But we have to let go of what doesn’t work.

Which reminds me of a popular old quote, “There is no right way to do the wrong thing.”

Dates are the fruits of the date palm tree which is a food of high nutritional value. They are used abundantly in the month of Ramadan when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. The sweetness of the date takes the edge off hunger and this is another reason why fasts are opened with dates. This prevents a person from overeating after he has opened his fast.

Dates contain calcium, sulfur, iron, potassium, phosphorus, manganese, copper, magnesium, volatile oils, Vitamin-B6, folic acid, Potassium, Iron and Magnesium, proteins, sugars, vitamins and are rich in natural fibers which contribute to a healthy body and mind.

Dates provides natural sugar in the form of glucose and fructose which is ready for immediate absorption and, is infinitely far superior to cane-sugar.

Eating dates has great benefits which can be illustrated as follows:

Prevents Cancer: Dates are very nutritious and contain natural fibers. Modern medicine has shown that they are effective in preventing abdominal cancer. In general Bedouin Arabs, who eat them on a regular basis, show an extremely low incidence rate of cancer.

Weak heart: Dates are an excellent remedy for weak heart. Dates soaked overnight should be taken twice a week which strengthens the heart.
Bedouin Arabs who regularly consume dates have shown an extremely low rate of heart disease.

Treatment for Obesity: The wide variety of nutritious elements in dates makes it hunger-resistive! So treatment by eating few dates when feeling hungry helps reduce hunger and be filled. These dates will provide the body with the necessary sugar and stimulate the intestine which reduce hunger greatly, and eventually, reduce food consumption.

Eases child-birth: Eating dates eases the pain of childbirth. Scientifically they are known to contain hormones which strengthen the uterus, help produce milk for nursing mothers and also prevent blood loss after childbirth. (The ripe fruit contains a substance that urges uterine spasms and increases contractions especially in the time of delivery. This substance resembles 'oxytocin' that is secreted by pituitary gland, which encourages contractions of the uterus. Dates contain some stimulants which strengthen the muscles of the uterus in the last months of pregnancy. This helps the dilation of the uterus at the time of delivery and reduces post-natal bleeding).

Ideal for breast-feeding mothers: Dieticians consider dates the best food for breast-feeding mothers. This is because dates contain elements that assist in alleviating depression and enrich the breast milk with the nutrients needed to make the child healthy and resistant to disease.

Bones: Calcium is important for strong bones so this is an additional benefit that dates provide. As dates are rich in calcium, they contribute to healthy bones. For this reason it is recommended that children and older adults, especially women, eat plenty of dates to strengthen their bones.

Modern science has also proved the effectiveness of dates, in preventing diseases of the respiratory system.

Intestinal Disturbances: Eating dates in the morning on an empty stomach kills intestinal worms and other parasites, for dates have an antidotal potency which restrains their growth. According to Metchnikoff, a great Russian scientist, liberal use of dates keeps in check the growth of pathological organisms and helps to establish a colony of friendly bacteria in the intestines.

Improves Eye sight: Dates are also important in maintaining good vision and are effective in guarding against night-blindness.

Cures constipation: Dates are also highly beneficial in the treatment of constipation as the roughage provided by it stimulates sluggish bowels. They should be immersed in water at night and taken after making them into fine syrup the next morning to secure laxative effect.

Remedy for Sexual Debility: Date syrup can be used as a treatment for weak heart. It can also be use for the treatment of sexual weakness. When it's mixed with milk and honey, dates can be used as a tonic for the treatment of sexual disturbances for both sexes. And such syrup strengthens the body and raises its energy levels. The elderly would benefit from this syrup too. It improves their stamina and purges their bodies from the toxins that have accumulated in their cells along the years.

Remedy for Liver and Inflammations: Dates remedy Lever and purge it from toxins, Breaking the fast with …

All fitness centers are a place for many types of gym goers, this does not include bodybuilding gyms and women’s only fitness centers. All fitness centers provide personal training. There has always been some separation with male and female personal trainers. The big question here is why males and females avoid personal training with the opposite sex?

From a female personal trainer perspective, I see this male and female personal trainer avoidance quite often. First, most personal trainers are willing to work with anyone and everyone. Some may prefer older adults, men, women, children, or just athletes. In my own personal experience some older women tend to avoid male personal trainers because they feel as though they are only into body building which reduces the chances of training with a male trainer. Some women think male trainers are the “Arrogant” type. A good majority of women only want to train with female trainers because they are uncomfortable with training with men. Most women are seeking trainers that are understanding and knowledgeable. Some look for trainers that specialize in certain aspect of training such as weight-loss, corrective exercise, strength training, and do not have a preference in male or female.

The other day I encountered a gym goer while training some clients. Lets call her “Connie.” She spoke with some of my clients both male and female. She asked them about my ability as a personal trainer as well as my personality. My clients then discussed my training methods and personality. When I walked over and introduced myself she said she has been looking for a personal trainer for a while now and that I seemed like the type of trainer she wanted to work with. Of course I had to ask her why. Hearing some frustration in her voice stated she felt intimidated by the male Personal Trainers that she has seen in this particular fitness center. She needed to be trained by someone more “like her”, meaning a female personal trainer.

On very rare occasions men have come to me seeking advice on reaching goals. Granted I am always willing to assist anyone with any questions fitness related whether they are male, female, young, and old. I have had men deliberately avoid me like the plague at the gym even though they have seen me training for several months. Do the letters on the back of my uniform not state “Personal Trainer”? Am I intimidating? Do you think my years of experience and knowledge are inadequate? Am I not strong enough to spot you? “Do you think you will offend me while speaking to me?”

A few years ago while at the gym with my husband. I was spotting him on his last set on the bench press. There was a guy on the chest press clearly needing some assistance. He waited until my husband was finished and walked right past me without a word and asked my husband for a spot. I was disappointed. I may not be 6 foot and weighing in at 200lbs but I can clearly spot a grown man lifting over 200lbs. I was deliberately ignored. The question is why? Is it a testosterone thing? Do you not feel comfortable asking a female personal trainer for assistance? Is it the male ego?

According to an anonymous source I successfully received some answers to my previous questions. Most men prefer train with male personal trainers because of body type or physique. Training with another male that is fit, or “in shape” will ultimately result in the same fitness results. Many men believe female trainers are not knowledgeable or have no way to relate to them. Others see female trainers as a distraction, may have an attitude, or bad personality. Some men could care less as long as their fitness goals are met. In some cases men prefer a female trainer because training with a male personal trainer makes them feel out of shape. There is definitely a pattern with both sides. Everyone wants personal training with someone they can relate to whether it is a male or female trainer. The choice is ultimately up to you.

While researching this particular topic I have found little …

Public health education can be considered an ambiguous term. It teaches the proper way to improve one’s health, and can involve only one or two people, or the population of several countries. Anything that can seriously threaten the physical, mental, or spiritual health of a wide range of people, notably due to their interactions with one another, can be classified as a threat to the community’s public health. This is why public health education becomes a necessary tool to aid people against the spread of potential diseases and illnesses. Five of the most important reasons of how public health education can prove beneficial are as follows:

1. People are able to learn how to prevent the spread of communicable diseases through the training and methods being taught in education. People are able to have better access to information regarding general prevention of diseases, including the knowledge of what to do and how to act during epidemics in their area. Certain diseases have their own individual prevention methods that people should be well aware of, and employing these techniques lessens the risk of being infected by possible diseases. Through public health education, even simple things such as wearing a flu mask in particularly affected areas, or knowing when to take vaccines for a particular illness that is prominent at that time of the year, always proves very effective in limiting the number of people affected annually.

2. More people are able to access private and public medical institutions to prevent diseases or medical conditions, or to better treat them. Without the benefits of a public health education, most people may feel healthy enough and not find the need to go for a general check-up. Being aware that it is necessary to see your doctor regularly is one of the important things learned in a good public health education. Most medical hospitals and clinics offer immunization or vaccine shots during the flu seasons, or when a general outbreak of hepatitis is going around, and a public health education ensures that more people know to go to these facilities and avail of the treatment, thereby lessening the amount of ill people.

3. People are able to adopt a healthier behavior to lessen the risk of diseases being spread among themselves. Keeping things cleaner around the house, opting to lessen or quit smoking altogether, or exercising more are just a few of the many different ways taught in public health education to combat sickness and improve one’s lifestyle.

4. People become more aware of information relating to the disease, rather than believing in just public perception. Public health education not only deals with how to prevent illnesses, it also provides details of how a disease works, which may dispel some myths and fallacies about it in society. The HIV virus for example, can be spread through unprotected sexual intercourse, but not through activities such as kissing or touching. This also helps change a person’s views towards someone infected, promoting more empathy rather than discrimination.

5. People are able to help and contribute to disease prevention by supporting or volunteering at health care facilities. Public health education is more than just spreading information; it also calls people to actively participate in aiding others. To be able to protect one’s health, it is also necessary to protect the health of other people around you, and helps foster a more close-knit community and a better sense of camaraderie.

Natural juices are rich in fructose, unlike water or low fat milk, according to Dr. Richard Johnson from the University of Florida College of Medicine. Researchers believe that fructose may trigger obesity for humans.

Previous studies connected excessive drinking of soft drinks and fruit juices with a high risk of diabetes, blood pressure, or obesity, said Johnson. Glucose sends signals to the body to produce insulin, a hormBMI calculator, calorie counter, carbs counter, calorie calculator, diet planner, menu planner, workout planner, weight loss, weight loss tools, nutritional information, nutrition labelone that tells the brain when to stop eating and turns sugar into energy. Fructose does the opposite and causes resistance to insulin, said Johnson.Weight gain may appear when large amounts of fructose are consumed over a long period of time, according to Peter Havel, an endocrinologist at the University of California.

Some natural juices have larger amounts of sugar than sodas. For instance, apple juice has more fructose than a soda, said Havel. A cup of apple juice has twenty more calories than the same amount of soda, according to the Department of Agriculture Nutrient Data Laboratory.

High-fructose corn syrup or fructose may lead to high levels of uric acid in the body. Dr. Johnson and his research team showed in a previous study on lab mice that a high-fructose diet leads to insulin resistance and the body produces more uric acid. Glucose does not cause the same problems, said Johnson.

Too much natural juice may also increase the children's risk of bone fractures.

Who is home fitness for?

Focus on putting together a solid home fitness plan if you’re looking to get better physical conditioning and improve the shape of your body. It doesn’t matter the age or ability of the individual, anyone can put together a basic workout focusing on three components to show results. Stick with cardiovascular conditioning, strength performance, and stretching to increase functional ability.

Increasing your cardio endurance doesn’t mean you have to use a machine or have a wide open space. A good running program (slow or fast) can be achieved with a pair of running shoes. For those looking for a piece of equipment to aid them in their cardio workout, they have a good amount of options. A few types of devices to pick from are:rowers, treadmills, bikes, and gliders.

Strength training can be accomplished with body weight movements or various forms of weighted resistance from an array of equipment. A good home fitness schedule hits the major muscle groups at least one time in the course of a weekly workout.

Body weight resistance exercise routines can be as basic as push-ups,squats, and core conditioning or you might want to make it a little more challenging by using various types of equipment like a pull up bar or a weighted vest.

The general pieces of weight exercise devices are a barbell and weights with a flat workout bench. For those with limited space, the use of adjustable dumbbells or adjustable kettlebells will work just as effectively. Strength workouts routines use a variety of equipment to get the greatest benefits.

Stretching is one area of a fitness plan most individuals put very little time into or don’t do it at all. The greatest results from working out will come from incorporating stretching into your weekly workouts and it shouldn’t be overlooked.

Regardless of your flexibility, everyone can receive the benefits of increased range of movement, reduced tension in muscles, and muscular coordination. Yoga and Pilates are two types of stretching programs that can be all-encompassing workouts on there own.

Why home fitness

Home fitness will provide the same results as any franchise gym center at the fraction of the cost and on the time schedule you set. No more hurry to make it to the gym to get a fast workout in before it closes. Stop paying monthly dues for equipment or programs you don’t even use.

Most gym programs require a signed contract that commits members to up to a year of expensive monthly dues that are taken even if you don’t use the facility for a month or more.

Trying to make it to the gym to get a last-minute workout in before it closes can be a hassle. Not to mention the time wasted and workout ruined from waiting to use a specific machine when the gym is busy.

Other areas of home fitness to consider

Nutrition is a substantial component of home fitness and when worked into the plan correctly, can provide high levels of energy and beneficial stress relief throughout the day. Following a basic plan of small healthy meals with sensible snacks will keep the energy levels up over a long period of time.

Eating lean portions of meat and having a serving of vegetables with each meal will give you a good proportion of needed nutrients. Fruits and nuts are a good alternative for bad snack choices. The last thing you want is to do is sabotage a healthy meal plan with garbage.

Lack of water consumption can kill workout performance and make it extremely hard to progress with results. While it is advisable to drink water before, during, and post workout, it is also important to drink it in moderate amounts during the day.

Adjust the amount of water you need by monitoring you activity level throughout the day. If you want your body to function properly make sure to drink plenty of water.

Don’t underestimate the role rest plays in allowing the body to adapt and repair itself for the next workout. A good rule to follow is to get a minimum of two days rest from a home fitness workout during a week period with the days off being staggered or …
