It refers to the set of practices perceived by a community to be associated with the preservation of health and healthy living. It is the branch of science that deals with the promotion and preservation of health. In everyday life settings, hygiene practices are employed as preventative measures to reduce the incidence and spreading of disease.

The terms cleanliness (or cleaning) and hygiene are often used interchangeably, which can cause confusion. In general, hygiene mostly means practices that prevent spread of disease-causing organisms. Since cleaning processes (e.g., hand washing) remove infectious microbes as well as dirt and soil, they are often the means to achieve hygiene. Other uses of the term appear in phrases including: body hygiene, personal hygiene, sleep hygiene, mental hygiene, dental hygiene, and occupational hygiene, used in connection with public health.

Home hygiene pertains to the hygiene practices that prevent or minimize disease and the spreading of disease in home (domestic) and in everyday life settings such as social settings, public transport, the work place, public places etc.

Hygiene in home and everyday life settings plays an important part in preventing spread of infectious diseases. It includes procedures used in a variety of domestic situations such as hand hygiene, respiratory hygiene, food and water hygiene, general home hygiene (hygiene of environmental sites and surfaces), care of domestic animals, and home healthcare (the care of those who are at greater risk of infection).

Body hygiene pertains to hygiene practices performed by an individual to care for one’s bodily health and well-being, through cleanliness. Motivations for personal hygiene practice include reduction of personal illness, healing from personal illness, optimal health and sense of well-being, social acceptance and prevention of spread of illness to others.

Personal hygiene practices include: seeing a doctor, seeing a dentist, regular washing/bathing, and healthy eating. Personal grooming extends personal hygiene as it pertains to the maintenance of a good personal and public appearance, which need not necessarily be hygienic.

Body hygiene is achieved by using personal body hygiene products including: soap, hair shampoo, toothbrushes, tooth paste, cotton swabs, antiperspirant, facial tissue, mouthwash, nail files, skin cleansers, toilet paper, and other such products.

The practice of personal hygiene has several benefits. Some of these benefits are discussed below:

• It prolongs one’s lifespan:

Since the practice of personal hygiene curb the spread of infectious diseases, it increases the number of years that one spends on this earth. Poor hygiene shortens one’s life.

• To avoid intermittent illness:

The practice of personal hygiene helps the individual to avoid intermittent sicknesses that is illness that when cured starts again within short periods or at irregular intervals. This has a great toll on the finances of the individual due to the unexpected paying hospital bills.

• Increase in productivity:

When all the workers in a firm maintain personal hygiene, it helps in increasing the general productivity of the company. This is especially the case in industries where specialization of work is employed. Factions of work are slowed down or even halted as a result of the sickness of a specialized worker. It results in failure to meet deadlines and this is very detrimental to the success of any industry.

• It increases one’s respect and personal ego:

An individual who maintains personal hygiene earns respect wherever he or she finds himself or herself. It helps him to gain association and friendship owing to the fact that everyone always wants to be with clean people with good smell and breath.

• Improvement in national life expectancy ratio:

If members of the nation endeavour to maintain good personal hygiene, the national life expectancy ratio will be improved or increased. This would reduce the total death rate in the nation ensuring national development.

There are various ways of ensuring personal hygiene.

• Body cleansing – The whole body should be kept very clean. This can be done by regular bathing at least once a day. Also, long nails should be cut or removed because they house pathogens that cause diseases. It is advisable to use local body lotions like Shea-butter that nourishes the skin and keep it dry and healthy. Periodically the nostrils and the ears have to be cleaned since its …

Try These 6 Workouts To Mix Up Your Routine

Head to a group fitness class to keep your workout routine interesting, challenging and fun. You’ll get the best of both worlds – an fun workout with the structure and guidance necessary from a qualified instructor. There are so many options out there now for group classes. Choose from aerial yoga and rebounding to underwater spinning, cardio circuits, pilates reformer classes and so much more.

You’ll usually find a pretty comprehensive schedule at most gyms. Fitness has evolved so much so for the most part, most gyms have a large selection of classes. If you don’t find what you’re looking for at your gym, there are also great group classes offered at smaller studios and boutique fitness centers that might be worth checking out too. We offer a few of the classes below at our fitness vacation too which provides variety in the daily line up. Either way, if you’re looking for something different and feeling like you need a change in your normal line up, check out these classes.

HULA HOOPING CLASS

You probably thought hula hooping was either a thing of the past or something you only did as a kid. Think again! Hula hooping classes have become a fantastic way to move your body in a whole different way. Set to music, you’ll move and groove to your instructor’s choreography.

Fitness hoops are usually weighted which gives you a little resistance and makes this class more challenging than the regular hooping you might have done years ago. You’ll have to stabilize to maintain control and balance all while getting your heart rate up!

According to the American Council On Exercise, you can burn up to 600 calories per hour with this full body workout. Plus, you’ll improve flexibility and balance we well as strengthen the muscles in your back, abs, arms and legs. Some gyms even fuse hooping in other classes like Pilates and yoga.

GLIDING

Gliding discs make any workout more challenging. Generally, gliding discs are placed under hands or feet depending on the movement cranking up the intensity level in a non impact kind of way. You’ll have to exert more to maintain balance, stability and control while going through movements like lunges, squats, skaters, plank moves, mountain climbers, shuffles and so much more. Sound like fun?

You can try gliding at a local gym or studio. Some classes are all gliding – 50 minutes of upper body, lower body and core work. Some studios may also fuse gliding, like hula, into other fitness classes to mix things up. Either way, the moves are fun and effective. Pro Tip: If you glide at home, you can always use paper plates on carpet or towels on hard wood floors. Be careful of slipping though. Test out a few moves before you get started with a full on workout.

BODYWEIGHT TABATA

Bodyweight tabata is one of our guest’s favorite classes at the retreat. This class can be done anywhere but we do it on the beach so the views and the atmosphere make it a whole different ballgame. This fitness class is challenging! Most of the movements are moves that many people have done before – push ups, planks, dips, squats, lunges, power jacks, forearm get ups, fast feet and more. Doesn’t sound complicated or hard, right? It’s the format and the tempo that change everything for this workout though.

If you’re not familiar with Tabata, the format is 20 seconds of intense work followed by 10 seconds of rest 8 times. For example, we would do 20 seconds of push ups x 10 seconds of rest 8 times which is equal to about 4 minutes. 20 seconds of work might not sound like a lot but when you repeat it over and over and over again, it taxes muscles in a really great way. You’ll sure to feel the burn with this workout!

Don’t worry, you don’t have to join us for a fitness vacation just to try out this class. There are plenty of gyms and studios that offer it too. Be on the look out for Tabata or even a HIIT class that uses bodyweight …

This overview presents the key issues to consider when designing and executing the best estate plan. Also, the work does not stop at signing your estate plan documents; you must also complete the follow up work of beneficiary designations, memorandum to fiduciaries, etc. The goal is to avoid the pitfall of no plan done and the disaster when wills and trusts are in place but the asset ownership and beneficiary designations frustrate the plan by having assets pass to the spouse and not the trust.

If you do nothing else after reading this, write and deliver a “Memorandum to Survivors” and review asset ownership, all as described at the end of this post.

A comprehensive estate plan can accomplish many goals, such as providing for survivors, ensuring your children are cared for, determining the flow of your assets upon your death, and reducing the amount of taxes your estate will pay while administering your estate. The most important goal is that you have peace of mind knowing that your estate will be administered in accordance with your wishes.

Estate Planning Pyramid

Constructing a pyramid can be helpful for understanding all that goes into an estate plan, much like nutrition and investments. Each level of the pyramid addresses a new level of complexity in your family and financial situation – that is, everyone needs level one, but not all need the later, more complex levels.

Pyramid: Level One

The first level of estate planning provides the most basic protections so it is most suitable to single individuals with no children and few assets. This level of estate plan typically includes the following forms:

Health Care Proxy: This document allows you to appoint people to make decisions about your health care and treatment when you are not capable of doing so. You typically select the surviving spouse and then have a first and second alternate if you wish. Some states call such documents “medical directives” or “medical powers of attorney.”

Living Will: This makes your wishes clear as to whether or not you want to have heroic means used to prolong your life.

Anatomical Gift Instrument: This allows you to have a hospital use organs and other body parts for others in need of a transplant.

Pyramid: Level Two

The second level is most appropriate for individuals in committed relationships. This level includes all the forms listed in the first level, but adds a durable power of attorney. This document grants a power of attorney to the other to manage your financial affairs if you are absent or you become incapacitated.

Pyramid: Level Three

When you have children, you want to ensure that they will be both cared for and provided for in the manner you wish. To achieve this, you need a will to appoint a guardian, for the “care,” and create a trust to manage assets, for the “providing.”

A will is a formal document that designates your personal representative or executor, any alternates, plus a guardian and any alternates for children under age 18, then instructs your personal representative to pay off your debts, and distribute your estate per your wishes.

A trust is an entity that you create and can be used for many purposes. The trustee acts as the owner of what the trust holds, while the beneficiaries get all the benefits from what the trust holds. For estate planning, trusts are used to reduce estate taxes in various ways. Trust vehicles can also describe how and when assets are distributed. For example, the grantor of a trust could insist that assets not go to children until they are age thirty-five. The trust vehicle could also provide where assets flow if all family members die without issue. For example, assets could flow to a charity or educational institution.

Providing for Survivors: You need to address how your assets and any life insurance flow after your death in order to ensure that your resources allow those who survive you to maintain the same standard of living, during their life expectancies, that you all had during your life. If your investments are not sufficient, even after making liquid certain kinds of personal property (e.g., a second home), then there …

A dedicated electrical outlet is strongly recommended for an infrared sauna in most manuals. Infrared sauna heaters consume a lot of electrical power (although less than a steam sauna heater), and improper power supply increases risks of damage to your home and health (i.e. by inflammation). Quality electrical wiring and outlets help to reduce these risks to a minimum.

The best solution is to ask a professional electrician to install a dedicated outlet for you. However if you have skill and knowledge you can do it yourself. Here is a list of things you should think of:

  • Check the outlet type your sauna requires. Most probably it will be 120V 15Amp, but it can be 120V 20Amp, 240V 15Amp or 240V 20Amp, also some infrared sauna models can require two electrical outlets instead of one. Non-US readers should look on the outlet types that are common in their country.
  • Choose a right cable to power an outlet. You should check that wire section and insulation are enough for required voltage. If the cable will be too thin it can heat up and even inflame.
  • Consider the possibility of putting a wire in a wire way. Especially if you have home animals who can bite the exposed wire.
  • Consider the possibility of using GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet. It will protect you from short circuit and ground fault while operating your sauna. It is often required by law in possibly wet places such as a bathroom or outdoors.
  • You may want to install an additional switch to turn your sauna off. Check if your sauna has an on/off switch. If it hasn’t, then you can find it convenient to install one, so you will be able to turn the sauna off completely.
  • Check before and after. Before installing an outlet check that all components you have (outlets, switches, wires) don’t have any type of defects. Re-check when you finish, there can be damage you’ve done while working.
  • Remember about safety! Always turn off the power before doing anything with electrical wiring.

THE PROBLEM:

We’ve all received bills from our doctors and may have mailed them to our insurance company or third-party administrator (TPA) only to get a statement back indicating that the bill cannot be paid because it is a balance forward bill. “I don’t get it,” you say “why can’t they pay my bill?”

CONFUSED?

If you are confused about the claim or bill terminology, rest assured you’re not alone. Medical billing has its own unique language, just as any other industry does. Unfortunately this “language” makes it hard for us average Joe’s to understand. When discussing your bill with your insurance company/TPA or your medical provider’s billing staff, they may refer to your bill as a claim, bill, account balance, HCFA, 1500 or UB. “Whew,” you say, “what they heck are they talking about?”

BECOMING BETTER INFORMED:

Many people who have health coverage feel that just having coverage is all they need to do. “It’s my insurance company’s responsibility,” they say or the ever popular “My doctor is supposed to bill my insurance; it’s his problem, let him worry about it.” DON’T YOU BELIEVE IT! Your insurance policy is between you and your insurance company/TPA and are ultimately you’re responsible if the claims don’t pay, whether they were in fact denied or just didn’t reach the insurance company in the first place. So understanding the lingo, and medical bills falls into the lingo category, is to your advantage and will prevent you from experiencing unnecessary problems and frustration.

BILLS, CLAIMS – WHAT THE HECK ARE WE TALKING ABOUT?

There are several types of health claims (or bills) and they may be referred to by different names. The different names can make it complicated for patients to understand, especially when they receive repeated bills from their doctor or other medical provider. A health insurance claim, also called “claim,” “medical claim,” “standardized bill,” or “bill” is simply a statement of charges for services or treatment received from a medical or dental provider. Although most patients never see a standardized billing form, they may hear them mentioned when discussing their outstanding bills with their medical providers or insurance company/TPA.

LACK OF UNDERSTANDING:

Today, claims submitted to insurance companies/TPA are generally required to be on a standardized claim form. This is important to understand because medical/dental claims are processed using a unique coding system, which allows the claim to be processed more accurately and efficiently. Whether the claim is submitted to the insurance company/TPA on paper or in an electronic format, the end result is the same. The insurance company/TPAs computer system reads the demographic and provider information as well as the medical codes that indicate the diagnosis and the type of services received. Then the claim is processed according to your plan’s guidelines that are stored in the insurance company/TPA computer.

Because standardized claim forms contain all pertinent information that is necessary to process a claim and as a rule balance forward claims don’t provide the information needed, insurance companies/TPAs will often kickback a balance forward bill to the patient or deny the bill outright, using a code that indicates the reason they aren’t paying is because they received a balance forward bill.

THE TYPES OF BILLS:

BALANCE FORWARD BILL: This is the type of bill that most patients receive after a medical visit. A balance forward bill is a simply a statement sent to the patient from a provider’s billing office or collection agency that indicates an amount owed by the patient. These types of bills rarely include the detailed information necessary for the insurance company/TPA to process your claim, generally only listing a balance forward amount (which can include multiple dates of service and any accrued interest). The charge on the bill may encompass all of the unpaid charges in your account.

FORM 1500: This bill type used to be called a HCFA, and that name may still be used by some in the medical/insurance industry. Whether it’s called a 1500 or HCFA, this bill type is the standardized billing form that doctors, medical suppliers and other medical vendors use to submit their claims for payment. Dentists submit their charges on a similar billing form, called an ADA Dental Claim …

Choosing proper and good toys for children is a must to parents. Why? Good toy means an educational toy that helps children to gain maximal development, from analytical thinking, motoric sensor system, to creativity. Since toy is children’s tool to learn, good toy must provide fun moment to kids. Proper toy covers one that is safe and suitable to the age. The toy must not contain any hazardous material and small parts that are dangerous for the health of children.

Among many toys, LEGO has been the name of educational and fun toy. LEGO gives room to many people, especially children to develop imagination, think and train the emotion (be more patient). After one accomplishment of LEGO project, kids feel satisfied, proud, and strive to do more. Say, as an example, your kid built LEGO vehicle and his friend built a great building. Both of them will share wonder and are encouraged to develop. Imagine how great it is! Furthermore, adults have proven the benefit of LEGO toys because most of them are already familiar with it since childhood.

Many LEGO projects have amazed us. One day we see a small house, months ahead we watch a big LEGO town. In childhood time, we were proud of robot style LEGO we made. Today, we will be amazed with the new LEGO robot that can move, talk, and even sense made by our children. The latest product of LEGO called LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 is microcomputer bricks with intuitive programming software. The NXT technology itself is the key to bring the robot to life. Mindstorms robot is intelligent and computer controlled. The sensors and motors enable the robots to move in precision, to detect any movement, to have zero obstacles, to sense and measure distance. These abilities result on a sense of touch to the robot. Your kids can even give command to the robot to do things such as turn on the TV or close the room’s door.

The advantages and fun of LEGO Mindstorms NXT 2.0 will trigger children to create more and more. This intelligent bricks allow your kids to design ANY robot projects they want. When they can picture the robot in mind, surely they can make it. It is not limited to the boy, but the girls are also invited to play the LEGO. Moreover, constructing the LEGO Mindstorms NXT in a peer group is good to build the sense of teamwork and friendship. Once the robot is fully constructed, your children can give it a name, something like “Cute Dog” or “Teddy Bear”, the LEGO Mindstorms could become a good companion to them.

Any Wii fanatic knows just how popular My Fitness Coach for the Wii is. In fact, even though it’s more of a workout program than a traditional video game, it once ranked as the best selling video game on Amazon.

While its popularity is high, My Fitness Coach may not be for everyone. Here are 10 facts that you should know before buying this Wii personal trainer program:

1. My Fitness Coach does not use the Wii Balance Board. Instead, the program relies on the honor system. Your Wii personal trainer, Maya, will have you go through a quick set of exercises including jumping jacks, push-ups, lunges, and crunches to assess what kind of shape you’re in. You will be asked to enter your name, gender, weight, height, date of birth as well as some measurements  including waist, chest, thigh, bicep and neck circumferences. The benefit of not using the balance board is that you get to incorporate a wide variety of exercises into your workouts that could never be possible with the balance board. Maya will also ask you if you have a heart monitor, stability balls, step benches and/or hand weights. If you have them, Maya will incorporate them into your workouts.

2. My Fitness Coach feels more like an aerobics DVD than a video game. The main difference here is that the program will change your routine depending on your progress and keep your workouts challenging and fresh. How many times have you stopped using workout DVD’s because you grew tired of the same thing over and over? Your Wii personal trainer will check in with you multiple times during your workout to see how you’re doing. The only time you use the controller is to respond to her queries. Maya will then adjust future workouts based on your responses.

3. My Fitness Coach contains six areas of focus. They are: weight loss, cardio, upper body strength, core body strength, lower body strength and flexibility. Based on the info you provide, Maya will suggest the area she feels needs the most focus. However, you have the ability to choose which area you feel needs the most attention.

4. My Fitness Coach contains nearly 500 workouts. In order to provide you with an extremely well rounded and productive workout experience, your Wii personal trainer will be able to choose from nearly 500 workouts to get the job done. You can also be certain that no two workouts will ever be quite the same.

5. Choose from multiple workout locations and styles of music. Another issue with with workout DVD’s other than routines becoming stale is the fact that you’re looking at the same video shot in the same location day after day. Whether it’s shot in an aerobics studio or on a California beach, one gets tired of seeing the same thing over and over. Not so with My Fitness Coach. Are you in the mood for an urban environment or a dojo? How about a desert oasis? Different locations help keep your workout experience fresh and enjoyable. You can also choose from seven different types of music including 80’s, Hip Hop, Latin and Dance.

6. Your Wii personal trainer works around your schedule. No one understands the importance of commitment more than Maya. She will suggest a workout schedule for you based on your goals, but in the end you decide your schedule. After all, many of us lead busy lives and have hectic schedules. You can choose what days of the week to work out on as well as the duration of each workout. For example, on Tuesday you can workout for 15 minutes and then go for a more intense 45 minute session on Thursday.

7. My Fitness Coach has a group exercise mode. You can create up to four profiles on My Fitness Coach, so it makes sense to allow multiple people to work out at the same time. Your Wii personal trainer thankfully allows this. Just be sure to have a massive space available if you plan to work out with two or three other people.

8. You will sweat. The workouts designed by your Wii …

Walls accumulate a lot more dust than you might realize, regardless of the finish. To achieve a clean wall, first, remove all the pictures and wall décor. Second, move furniture away from the walls so you can have easy access. Lastly, when you actually start cleaning, dust your walls from the baseboard upwards to the ceiling using the wall brush of your vacuum cleaner or a soft hair wall brush. Pay special attention to corners, baseboards, and moldings because those places can gather the most dust and cobwebs.

Wipe off Stains Quickly

To maintain a clean wall, food stains should be wiped off as soon as possible to remove any solid particles. If there are grease spot remaining, use cleaning fluid with an absorbent mixture like Fuller’s earth clay or tailor’s (French) chalk. For ink splatters, carefully blot up the stain as soon as possible using a moist towelette. The next step is to apply Fuller’s earth or tailor’s chalk as you would a grease stain. If the ink stain remains, you can try using ink erasers as another option.

Wood-Paneled Walls

Wood-paneled walls, rarely need more than dusting. However, if they begin to look dehydrated and grimy, you can clean them with a soft cloth along with liquid wax. Rub the panels continuously with a clean soft cloth until you can touch the wall without leaving fingerprints. If your wood-paneled walls are painted with glossy or enamel paint, avoid using cleaning these types of walls with soap. Using soap on enameled surfaces usually leaves a distinctive film.

Wallpaper

Day-to-day care for wallpaper includes immediate removal of marks or stains. Light smudges and pencil marks can be removed by using art gum. Crayon marks can be removed with a soft sponge and cleaning fluid, though this should be tested first on a small patch of wallpaper to make sure the cleaning fluid won’t ruin the wallpaper. Warm soapy water can be used if the paper is washable.

Washable Wallpaper

Even if the wallpaper is labeled as washable, you should still test it before you start to work on it. Use warm, soapy water and a soft sponge and carefully test the paper by rubbing it with little water using a light touch. If the colors do not run and the area dries adequately, you can go ahead and wash your wallpaper. Washable wallpapers can be cleaned using warm water made with mild white soap or a mild detergent. Continue as mentioned before, being careful to not apply too much pressure while rubbing. Remember to take great care when washing wallpapers since using too much water will soak the wallpaper, weakening the glue.

Delicate Wallpaper

To clean thin, delicate wallpaper use warm water with no detergents or soap. Always work your way from the bottom upward. This is important since any water that dribbles down a soiled wall makes a streak that is not easy to remove. Also, change the water when it becomes dirty so that you’re not dipping and wiping your wallpaper with dirty water.

Lacquered Wallpaper

Lacquered wallpapers can easily be washed with warm soapy water or detergents. Wallpapers coated with wall wax can be cleaned simply by using a damp cloth. Special cleaners are essential for fabric-coated walls.
