Meeting with the "Big Dogs"
|
Thursday morning 5/11: After a meeting of the big dogs, we've come to the conclusion that Sherpa support is currently inadequate to put in ropes from the snow-laden Camp IV to the Balcony - which is critical for teams who want to begin a summit push. Everyone will have to wait patiently for the 15th. Hopefully, we'll then be able to put 7 or 8 strong oxygen assisted Sherpas on the South Col to complete this difficult task. Above the Balcony, snow thins and whichever team desires to march upward will have the pleasure of carrying ropes along.
Doug is on his way down to Base Camp after a successful acclimatization climb. Once he's safely back, all our Everest climbers will be ready and waiting. Each climber will spend this free-time in his or her own way. Some will day hike, some may choose to disappear for a couple of days. Some may just rest and read. Will Cross will continue the stressful task of tracking and retrieving his final equipment barrel which has been spotted on the northern slopes of Mount Everest, in Tibet. I (BC manager) will put on my walking shoes with the goal of making it to Gokyo, which is reported to be stunning. I plan to return on the 15th.
Talk to you soon,
Roger Coffey, TNL - Base Camp Manager
