Doug Tumminello Reporting in From Base Camp

Hello, this is Doug reporting from Everest base camp. We finally made it here and are reunited with Roger. We met Roger on the 12th of April at Gorak Shep and trekked into base camp with him. The team is glad to be reunited with Roger, after a long week of anticipation. As most of you already know, we had to leave Roger in Katmandu to attempt to retrieve luggage that was lost by Thai Airways. After enduring several days alone in Katmandu, the team decided to consider the luggage, which contained a great deal of expedition equipment, "lost." We have resolved our equipment issues and appreciate all that Roger has done for the team.

We are glad that Roger is here with us now and that he safely endured a strike in Katmandu that resulted in the deaths of many people. We were able to make the final leg of our Trek into base camp with our long lost friend, and for that we are very grateful. Unfortunately, I had a short bout with altitude sickness but I am now feeling much better. The team is dedicated to being aware of altitude risks and symptoms, and addressing any concerns immediately.

Upon our arrival to base camp we met our great Sherpa team and the other climbers who will be joining us. Apa Sherpa conducted instruction on oxygen and we found it very informative. Our gear has now been moved into our tents and we are beginning to feel settled. Base camp is like a city of tents. There is a shower tent, cooking tent, and an incredible dining tent which is heated as well as carpeted. This also serves as the communications tent as well.

The view from base camp is stunning with a clear view of Pumori, Nuptse, Lhotse, Ama Dablam, and Everest. The Khumbu ice fall rises above us and we are all enchanted by the precarious, 2000 foot, serac. Over the next few days the team will focus on getting acclimatized by taking hikes thru the ice fall. At this point, we have one primary focus . . . safety. We plan on enjoying ourselves and doing all that we can to promote the safety of our team.
