If you are between the ages of 50 and 65 and you are going to be looking for health insurance or are looking for health insurance you need some help. This is a tough age (of course what age isn't starting with the terrible twos) because you are at a prime age to start developing health problems. Statistically speaking and statistics is the only language insurance companies speak, the insurance company can predict they are going to spend more on 50-65 year old than a 20-45 year old. For that reason premiums are much higher for the older person.

But, we Baby Boomers are a smart group and where there is a will, there is a way. So let's look at some of the options:

If you currently have a job and are looking to retire or start your own business, you have a couple of avenues you can investigate. First you can inquire if your company will let you buy health insurance through the company plan. If your company will let you do this your employer (assuming we are talking early retirement) may subsidize part of your premiums. If not, you still get group rates which are a whole lot cheaper than individual rates. If you are married and your spouse is still working strongly consider adding yourself to his / her plan if that option is available to you.

The next option (if you currently have a job which provides health insurance) is COBRA or Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. COBRA lets former employees and their dependents continue their employer's group coverage for up to 18 months. The best thing about COBRA is it is guaranteed. Your former employer's insurer can't turn you down even if you have a chronic medical condition. The worst thing about COBRA is the cost. Your employer generally covers 70% or more of your health insurance premium. With COBRA you have to pay the whole premium plus administrative costs. Industry surveys indicate based on an average premium (for 2007), a former employee would have to pay more than $ 373 a month for individual coverage and more than $ 1,008 a month for family coverage.

If you are not currently employed by a company who provides health insurance there are still choices for you. If you have pre-existing conditions such as diabetes or high blood pressure you can receive coverage through a state high-risk health program designed to help those with medical conditions that prevent them from getting insurance. Again though like COBRA the premiums can be quite high.

You can also check out professional organizations you could join or are already affiliated with to see if they offer health insurance policies for members. Because these are group plans, the premiums may be less than what you would pay in the individual market.

Finally, there is the individual health insurance option. There has been some progress in terms of offerings of policies for the 50-65 year age group market mainly because insurers see this age group as a potential growth market. Many Baby Boomers are in good health and have higher income than younger people. Also insurance companies hope that retirees will still purchase their products, such as supplemental insurance, even after they're eligible for Medicare. Some of policies currently offered may have premiums as low as $ 200 per month for people who are in good health and willing to pay a high deductible. Many insurance advice columnists recommend combining a high deductible individual health insurance policy with a health savings account. HSA contributions are made with pretax dollars, and any money left over in the account at the end of the year is rolled over for future use. Withdrawals are not taxed if used for qualified medical expenses.

In 1998, when Dr. Ashish Satav and his wife Dr. Kavita arrived in Melghat, one of Maharashtra's most backward tribal areas, the infant mortality rates in that region were stunning: more than 100 deaths per 1,000 live births – almost twice the Indian average of 52 per 1,000.

There were no hospital facilities anywhere close, and infant malnutrition was rampant – 10 times beyond the official government statistics.

Today, Ashish and Kavita, through sheer determination and ingenuity, have managed to reduce the mortality rates to around 60 per 1,000. Severe malnutrition cases have dropped by over 40%.

Over the last 12 years, this dynamic duo has treated over 38,000 patients across 36 poor villages in Melghat, saving many lives and treating people back to health.

Even as a youngster, Ashish was deeply inspired by Gandhi's call to youth to work in villages. His own grandfather was a leader in the Sarvodaya movement. As a medical student, Ashish used to visit Dr. Prakash Amte who did stellar work in the tribal areas of Gadchiroli in Maharashtra.

Once he graduated, instead of joining a lucrative big-city practice, Ashish knew he could have more impact by working in the poorest and most deprived parts of India. He landed up in beautiful, but poor, Melghat.

Ashish recounts an early experience. A tribal woman of around 30 came to him carrying a very sick infant. The child was severely malnourished and needed to be hospitalized. However, the mother -recently widowed and with no one else to look after her other children at home – refused to admit the child.

"The child will die," Ashish warned her.

"So be it," she replied. "I have four other children to look after and feed".

Ashish was shocked, but realized that she had no other option. The mother and child departed, and the child died. But the incident moved Ashish to work on child nutrition issues with a sense of urgency.

He realized that he and his wife could not serve all 250,000 villagers in the region. He also realized that many deaths were related not to lack of food, but to poor hygiene.

Following the thoughts of Dr. Abhay Bang, they trained tribal women to serve as village health workers, educating and supporting the families with nutrition and hygiene education, primary medical care, and nursing support.

Ashish also encouraged the villagers to start kitchen gardens. He channeled government and community aid to village soup kitchens, and got city experts to teach village women tasty recipes with local vegetables and cereals. These have brought down malnutrition and mortality, and earned Dr. Satav recognition and awards.

When I met Dr. Ashish Satav, his humility, plainspoken manner and commitment moved me beyond words. He shared astounding experiences in a nonchalant manner. For example, when his wife Kavita did a complicated delivery and saved the child, they found that the mother could not produce any breast-milk to feed the child.

A nursing mother herself, Dr. Kavita sent half her own milk to feed the baby -now a healthy boy. As a result, the couple created a program encouraging lactating mothers to donate part of their milk to help save other babies.

While it is shocking to realize the sharp and startling contrast between the India that we experience in our cities versus the pitiable state of affairs just a few hundred miles away, it is also heartening and inspiring to see people like Ashish and Kavita chipping away with great commitment to address and solve these problems. The least we can do is to support them in every way we can.

If you are a healthcare worker you may know about the dangers of a latex allergy but this allergen can affect the average person more than you know. A latex allergy is a reaction caused by the protein in rubber called latex. Most people associate latex with the gloves that are used in hospitals and daycare settings but latex can be found in places you would not suspect. Here are just a few of the products that can contain latex:

  • Gloves
  • Balloons
  • Condoms
  • Children’s Toys
  • Rubber Bands
  • Computer Mouse Pads
  • Diapers
  • Sports Equipment

Unfortunately in today’s world allergens can be found everywhere. Environmental allergens include pollution, smog, pollen, dust and mold. Food allergies are also very common with allergies to items such as dairy, nuts, shellfish, wheat and eggs. The last kind we will discuss are contact allergies to various items such as nickel and various chemicals. An allergy to latex is a contact form of allergy in that you have to touch it to get a reaction though the air can even contain latex particles when certain powder is applied or coated over the gloves. As can be seen by the short list of possible latex sources simple daily routines can become very dangerous for those that suffer from a latex allergy.

Latex Allergy Symptoms

As with many allergies the symptoms of an allergy to latex can be mild or severe. It all depends on how sensitive that person is. Typical symptoms can include:

  • red, itchy or watery eyes
  • runny nose
  • sneezing
  • rashes
  • hives
  • coughing
  • possible anaphylaxis(shortness of breath or shock)

Some other symptoms for those who wear latex gloves include cracks on their hands as well as rashes. Ironically the symptoms may take some time to surface. They can take take 12 to 36 hours to appear. These symptoms can be relieved by making sure that you take care of your hands, as well as wearing non-latex hypo allergenic gloves. Please keep in mind that latex allergies can cause serious life-threatening reactions like anaphylaxis with no previous warning or symptoms.

Who is at Risk for a Latex Allergy?

Naturally those that are exposed to latex the most are the ones at highest risk. These would include healthcare workers, daycare workers, food preparers, janitorial workers and rubber industry workers. Latex gloves are the most prevalent exposure. Some suggest that those with hay fever have a greater chance of developing latex allergy. People who had several operations in childhood are also more likely to have this allergy. Though as can be seen by the prevalence of latex in so many products, anyone can develop a latex allergy.

The reaction to the latex is to the protein in the rubber. Connections have been found to certain foods and latex allergy. Some of these foods are bananas, avocados, kiwi fruit and tomatoes. They contain a similar protein as latex and can therefore cause a cross-reaction.

If you suspect that you have this allergy it is of course advisable to contact your doctor. They will probably direct you to an allergist to confirm your allergy. Typically testing for a latex allergy is done via blood tests since a skin test could prove rather dangerous. We all tend to walk around oblivious to some of the dangers that surround us. Being aware of possible allergies including a latex allergy can possibly make a life or death difference.

At one time or another, you are bound to find yourself in the midst of a Health, Wealth, or Romance (relationship) crisis – or a combination thereof – and left to wonder what if anything should or could you do.

So, what should or could you do?

The first thing that you need to do is realize and understand the relationship these three very important factors in your life have in common. Something many people take for granted, isolating one from the other; hence, the only outcome, more often than not, is an escalation of the problem.

The solution, in all reality, is relatively simple – You must see the three, Health, Wealth & Romance as the whole of A Better LifeStyle. To quote Frank Sinatra, "You can't (shouldn't) have one without the other". It's a cycle you should not even attempt to disturb, much less break.

The degree of harmony and balance you maintain with Health, Wealth & Romance will be a determining factor in your lifestyle. If you haven't done this already … It's Never Too Late!

Health – Accommodate a proper healthy diet and exercise routine (doesn't need to be every day nor strenuous).

Limit Fatty Foods

Keep a low in fat. Saturated fat such fried foods, chocolate, cakes, and biscuits should not be a part of your regular diet. Unlike unsaturated fats, this fat is easily deposited as fatty tissue and will convert into cholesterol, causing your blood cholesterol level to go up, often to unsafe measures.

Reduce "Empty Calories"

Empty Calories are all those things you consume which are high in energy. However good this may sound on the surface, this energy comes from things such as alcohol and sugary drinks and serves no benefit in the nourishment of your body – not to mention that this energy is also short-lived. Consumed in "moderation", these drinks may pause no real problem, however.

Eat Foods Rich in Calcium and Iron

Calcium – is essential for maintaining strong, healthy bones.
Iron – helps deliver oxygen throughout the body

The Breakfast Myth Unfolded

Simply put – Don't skimp on it. A hearty breakfast will provide you the energy needed to push forward through your day at the office (or wherever you may work).

A Few Tips For Healthy Breakfasts:

– Fresh fruit, whole grain (bread or cereal)
– Rolled oats made with quick oats
– Toast with a thin spread of margarine (polyunsaturated or monounsaturated).
– A small glass of orange juice
– Yogurt (preferably plain) with some fresh fruit topping

Never, ever underestimate the importance that a regular exercise routine, no matter how medium, is to maintain a healthy body and mind.

Wealth – Although most commonly defined in financial terms … It is better defined in terms of "the degree of happiness in your life (loved ones, friends, etc.). Nevertheless, financial" does "play a big role in accommodating for the other two aspects of Health and romance. That's why it's essential that you find the right system – one that is time-tested and meets your needs and expectations. Just be aware of the many ill-intended "gurus" offering their less-than -complete system; full of empty promises.

Romance – By far could be the most interesting, yet disappointing, and frustrating of the three. However, what you want to keep in mind, whether man or woman, is that the best practices to follow are faithfulness & truthfulness. This piece of fact comes to you from 40+ years of marriage (yep, to the same woman). with this one the cards may very well always be on the table, so walk lightly … and whatever you do – adhere to those two best practices.

Most of us believe that caregiving must focus on the mind, body and soul. When seniors are lonely, they get depressed, just like you and I. Human beings need companionship, but we also need the right type of companionship. Perhaps like you, I strongly believe in matching a caregiver's personality with that of their client and I find it so unfortunate that many companies in the in-home care industry do not concentrate on this. Matching client personalities makes for a positive relationship, stronger mental health, and a stress free in-home caregiver situation. Everyone wins.

Yes, it takes a little longer to find the right caregiver, but that's okay, because in good in-home care companies they've found it prevents turnover, which is one of the complaints that many in the industry have. A true companionship-based caregiver scenario is one where the client is treated like family. The best way to achieve this is to make a proper match so that both the caregiver and the client see each other as family, it is best when it is a two-way street.

There was a very good research study in the "Journal of Health Psychology" put out by the American Psychological Association in 2011 (Cite: Vol. 30, No. 4, 377-385. DOI: 10.1037 / a0022826). The research is titled; "Loneliness, Social Isolation, and Behavioral and Biological Health Indicators in Older Adults," by Aparna Shankar, Anne McMunn, and Andrew Steptoe. In conclusion the research paper notes:

"Loneliness and social isolation may affect health independently through their effects on health behaviors. In addition, social isolation may also affect health through biological processes associated with the development of cardiovascular disease."

For those of who work as caregivers, they are hardly surprised. In fact, experts in the sector have been saying this all along. The families of elderly tell us that they too are concerned and it is often one of the primary reasons they contact a company for in-home caregiver services. I hope you understand and agree with myself, the families, and the empirical scientific research.

I believe no one should have to be lonely in old age, we are here to serve, and glad to help our clients live happy, healthy and with compassionate companionship. As our population ages these issues emerge to the forefront, and it is all of our responsibilities to makes sure everyone concerned is served fairly and treated with dignity. Please do the research and think of those people you know who are in need, we must make such positive steps a reality for all.

WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO COMMON SENSE?

It’s amazing to me how far we’ve drifted away from common sense and reality, especially about out health. The more intelligent we’re supposed to be, the less we appear to know. Wellness and health need to be our intention and our priority, as we are unable to do anything whatsoever, if we’re sick.

We’re smart! Some of us are clever! But (in today’s world) how many of us are actually wise? Again, put this in the category of wellness and health, where the mind, body, and spirit need to be fine tuned and working in conjunction. According to the dictionary: 1) SMART: is mental alertness, calculations, resourcefulness, quickness and ease in learning 2) CLEVER: is cagey, showing self-interest in dealing with others, and 3) WISDOM: is accumulated knowledge or enlightenment; the trait of utilizing knowledge and experience with common sense and insight and the quality of being prudent and sensible. According to the wise elders I grew up around, ‘To be smart, without wisdom was a ‘game for fools’

RESTORING SANITY TO HEALTH

Last year sometime (I think), Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart did ‘A Rally to Restore Sanity’ where over 250,000 people attended in Washington, D.C. Stephen Colbert was his ‘nemesis’ with the Fear factor. The same sanity/fear dichotomy happens BIG TIME in the world of health; almost bigger than anything else I can think of. The American health nightmare is one the grandest fear stories ever told. In one respect, it’s scarier than the actual story; in another respect, it’s not scary at all. That’s the dual nature of our Universal forces.

So, let’s be clear…when I see headlines like ‘Can Herbs Prolong Our Lives’ or ‘Is Vitamin C Really Good For You’, I’m shocked and appalled at how little most of us know about earth, nature, our own bodies, and how (all things whole, or not whole) relate to being healthy or sick. Explaining this in simple language could really make this a very long article; however, I’ll make every attempt at being brief, without sacrificing too much of the substance.

‘Everything We Need Is Already Here & Always Has Been’ means that the Omnipotent Mind Force, our Spiritual Universe that provides the Stars, the Moon, the Sun and the Planets, also provides everything we need for perfect health. The Stars, the Moon and the Sun are not man made. The same Spirit that manages the Universe (perfectly and without fail) supplied all aspects needed to maintain ‘vibrant health’.

Our perfectly controlled Universe has all the necessary elements needed to keep us healthy and free of disease from the beginning of time

If that didn’t sink in, read it over and over until you really GET IT.

In other words, you can be free and healthy of disease everyday, all your life, and everything you need to make that happen, has already been here, since DAY 1, and this doesn’t mean PROZAC and ADVAIR!

Most ancient people were very well aware of this. However, when contemporary thoughts started to rise to the surface, and someone asked, ‘How Do We Make More Money Doing This?’ Credibility, saneness, and truth flew out the window faster than a speeding bullet.

Thus, a new Health Story was born. Everything that the ancient Egyptians, Asians, Africans, and native Americans knew about wellness and REAL HEALTH was squashed and the Fairy Tale began. The voices of those early, true health professionals and practitioners, were silenced. The more they explained that great health was simply…excellent nutrition, pure water, pure protein, fruits, vegetables, herbs, and some

  • amino acids, along with some moderate exercise,
  • the more ‘processed sugar’ was introduced into the diet,
  • the more advanced terminology was used to make simple explanations appear confusing,
  • the more drugs were introduced, and
  • the more agencies and clubs were formed to carry on the Fairy Tale about your health.

All of this is done with the specific purpose of making SICK CARE more expensive, and to keep YOU running back and forth through a revolving door of non-stop SICK CARE. Do we need contemporary medical care? Of course, we do. Just not AS MUCH & HOW we’re using it now. It has a …

Family health insurance plans are necessary for a family to meet the health care expenses for each and every member of the family. Instead of going for an individual plan for each member of the family, you can go for family health insurance plans. A single policy might cover all the members of the family and the premium that you pay would also be less when compared to the individual policies for each members.

Almost all of the health insurance plans give you the basic coverage necessary but it is better to know from the insurer all the benefits of a particular plan. Before you take a policy you have to ensure that whether the policy covers physical exams, health screenings, prescription drugs, hospitalization, emergency care, dental services, and vision care. You can check with your agent or from the website whether all these are covered. Accordingly you can choose the best one that fits your needs. Apart from these you can also ask them whether they cover the ongoing treatments for any disorders or diseases. Some of the policies may not cover the alternative treatments like acupuncture and homeopathy. You may also check these.

Some of the health insurance plans might require you to be admitted to only certain hospitals. You have to check the list of hospitals from which you can get treatments done. Sometimes you may be referred to some specialist doctors who may be in a different hospital. You should know whether such special consultations and treatments are allowed according to your policy. If you are to start a family or retire from your work you should consider an appropriate policy. It is better to consult an independent agent instead of a captive agent. Independent agents may recommend you a good policy that covers you needs well.
