The primary objective of the Occupational Health and Safety Act is to ensure that safety at work is achievable in every organization big or small. By complying with this act, you can address issues that may pose danger to your employees, well before any untoward incidents occur.

Workplace inspections serve a critical role in fulfilling this objective and in maintaining a safe, productive work environment where your business can flourish. These are planned walk-through activities carried out in the work premises to critically examine various factors. Some of the aspects that may be covered are materials, buildings, equipment and so on which may potentially pose danger.

One should call in competent, experienced, safety consultants to outline how an effective safety inspection should be carried out for your workplace. Keep in mind that the nature of business, the kind of processes involved here, the kind of equipment being used etc have an impact on which aspects need to be covered during your workplace inspections.

Planning your Inspections

To carry out a truly effective inspection, it needs to be thoroughly planned where every important aspect is taken into consideration. Hiring experienced safety consultants is good move because they can bring in their expertise to point out various aspects that you may not have considered. In addition, you can have your own team enrolled in health and safety officer courses with these experts to learn how periodic inspections should be carried out to curb the risks in the workplace.

Establishing acceptable standards for various workplace activities, processes and the environment, in general, is a key component of workplace safety planning process. With the standards in place, it becomes easier for your employees and your inspectors to quickly identify increased risk in any area well in advance, so that it can be rectified before it causes any harm.

The Occupational Health and Safety Act Guide has been prepared to assist employers, workers, constructors, supervisors, owners, suppliers, and others who have duties under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

The purpose of the OHS Regulation is to promote occupational health and safety and to protect workers and other persons present at workplaces from work-related risks to their health, safety, and well-being.

The occupational health and safety professional plays a major role in the development and application of accident investigations, risk assessments, loss prevention, and safety training programs for workers. They develop programs that will in conserving life, health and property; improve productivity by implementing loss-control programs in consultation with company and labour officials; identify health and safety hazards in the work environment and advise corrective action.

Many of our communities have been involved with Community Needs Assessments, Community Health Needs Assessments, Community Economic Development Plans, and ongoing planning for the built environment. All of these planning lenses are helpful ways to look at communities, and build for the future. One of the most important lenses to use for community planning for the next 10 to 20 years is the projected impact of aging on our communities, counties and states. What will is mean for a state to move from being 39th in proportion of older adults in 2010, to being 4th by 2030? What does it mean for a county to have a population shift that includes an increase of older adults by over 100% in the next 10 years, along with a projected reduction of people under 40 years old?

Understanding the Demographic Trend

The demographic trend has been called by many names, such as the "Age Wave," or "Silver Tsunami," with arguments in meetings and on blogs about whether those terms are helpful or pejorative, descriptive or ageist. In addition, some people find the terms "elderly" difficult, while others find "seniors" to be patronizing. Once people have dealt with parsing the grammatical minefield, then the most important issues are to understand both the demographic trend and other substantive factors.

Although a few in the field indicate that the aging of the population is rather slow and easily absorbed, the vast majority of experts agree that this is a significant, fast-moving trend that will not be easily absorbed. Research I've conducted has covered everything from future health professional shortages and health system gaps to the built environment, funding and policy trends. The potential impact of the aging of our population on communities and states is significant. It will require proactive, sustained responses at community, state and national levels.

Some communities and states are better positioned to respond to this trend than others.

Impact Also Depends on a Few Other Key Factors

The ability of groups to effectively respond depends upon a number of other key factors. Although the demographic trend is the primary issue, other important factors impacting our ability to respond include the following:

  • Overall community health;
  • Poverty levels, average and median incomes (especially for middle aged and elderly);
  • Local municipal budgets, economic ratings, and taxing capacity;
  • Legislation, policies, and funding related to both aging and community development;
  • Regional infrastructure and built environment.

The impact of the demographic trend is also shaped by the state of community and regional planning already in place to deal with the impact of aging upon our communities. Leadership and citizen engagement are also important factors that could help drive and mobilize initiatives. Leaders can and should respond. The issues are complex, but not overwhelming. However, they need to be addressed proactively.

How a Social Calculator can Predict the Potential Impact of Aging for Communities and States

Many of these factors have been analyzed by our team through a number of aging related research and planning projects over the past few years. We are now completing an Aging Social Impact Calculator that can provide an initial scan of the local environment, and the state environment. It looks at key factors that shape a county's or state's social, economic, and community health.

Research projects that I've recently completed demonstrate that the Social Determinants of Health, health rankings, economic benchmarks and policy issues either help communities and states to move forward, or serve as additional challenges.

Social Determinants . The Social Determinants shape us as individuals, families and communities. They include things such as family income, jobs, poverty and financial assets. Income, assets, poverty, and unemployment have been demonstrated to be some of the most important shapers of family and community health, health disparities, and health equity. Race and ethnicity have been seen as extremely important by the World Health Organization, US federal government bureaus, and the health research and funding community. Individual, family and community educational levels are also significant. Taken together, or aggregated, one finds community snapshots that reflect the local economy, jobs and poverty; racial and ethnic mix; and educational levels. They help to predict how our lives will be shaped in the future.

Community and State Health

If you want to lose weight or you’re just interested in getting in shape, a fitness journal can be your key to success.

Much like a personal diary a journal is the one place where you can share all of your dreams and goals and at the same time create a plan to make those aspirations a real part of your life.

I’m sure by now, you know that in order to lose weight you need to burn more calories than you consume. Keeping a fitness journal can be a fun way to assess your current eating and exercise habits and formulate a strategy to reduce calories while increasing your physical activity.

Start your fitness journal by recording your current weight and measurements, if you like, you can even add a current photo of yourself. This is your starting point, so make sure you take the time to complete this important step. Months from now when your body is changing, you’ll be able to look back and see how much you have achieved. Once this base is established it will provide the motivation you need to keep you going.

Motivation or the lack thereof, can be the driving force behind your exercise program or the biggest obstacle in your efforts to lose weight. As a personal trainer who specializes in women’s fitness, I have found that women who keep a fitness journal have a far greater chance of success than those who do not.

You see a fitness journal makes you accountable for your weight loss plan. Once you’ve established your starting point and written down your goals, you’ll want to make some time everyday to record everything you eat and drink. That means everything. You many even be surprised when you realize how much food you consume.

Once you begin coming face to face with your food consumption, you’ll be able to determine which foods to keep in your diet and which foods you need to replace with healthier substitutes. There is a certain connection that your brain will make when you put pen to paper and become responsible for your own health. It’s easy to fool yourself into thinking that you are eating a somewhat healthy diet when you keep these thoughts locked away in your mind.

Along with recording your eating habits, you’ll want to write down your daily physical activities. Are you exercising regularly? For optimum women’s health you’ll need to exercise for at least 30 minutes a day for 6 days of the week. You can use your journal to determine your fitness level and increase it gradually for best results.

Challenge your fitness workout by making goals each week. For instance, you could set a goal to add more weights to your exercise program or to take longer walks, swim more laps, take a spinning class or learn to play tennis. The secret is to write down anything and everything that will keep you motivated to exercise regularly and eat healthy.

You can get the body that you desire, all it takes is a desire to succeed followed by a commitment to see it through. But the good thing is you don’t have to do it by yourself. Faithfully keeping your fitness journal will keep you focused on your goals and give you the motivation you need to excel.

If I’m going be honest about health supplements, I have to say I don’t fully believe in them. At one point in my life, I had so many health supplements I could have started my own health business from home! I wanted to improve my health and wellness and with these well -marketed products I had seen online, I thought that this was the way forward.

Unfortunately, when I began to research the health supplements currently available, I discovered that they might not be overly effective. Here is why I think health supplements don’t really work-

For a start, the answer is in the title – Health ‘supplements’. The word ‘supplement’ means ‘replacement’ and will never be as good as the natural version. I don’t understand why people like me have invested in health supplements such as vitamins and minerals, when a greater and more potent version was always available in our diets. Watercress, for example, has the highest Vitamin E content in anything else known to man. Even eating an orange will give you the vitamin C you need! Unfortunately, instead of buying cheap and natural, we invest in expensive products that usually contain chemicals that the body deem as toxic. So, in fact, some health supplements – depending on the ingredients- are actually adding more stress to the body and damaging it over time.

Even more disturbingly, a high percentage of the actual supplement is lost in the digestion process. This is why pills for example are less effective than spraying a vitamin spray under the tongue. Most health supplements are something that you have to eat or drink so you will never really be getting the full health benefits stated on the packaging.

If you are going to buy any type of supplement, make sure that it is organic and contain no ingredients that are unhealthy for the body. My best suggestion comes in the form of a powder and is called Spirulina. It doesn’t look very attractive but it is 100% plant derived and so smells quite fresh. You can add this to your drink or food and it is one of the most completely nutritional resources on the planet. I instantly feel energised after using this supplement and experience all- over wellness.

However, most health supplements are just over marketed and full of hype so to avoid disappointment, invest in a product that is natural, that ideally doesn’t have to be taken orally and that offers you a proven solution.

Gone are the days when people relied on condoms, diaphragms, and spermicide to protect them from unwanted pregnancy. With the number of unwanted pregnancies both in teens and adults on the rise, more and more people are turning to other forms of contraceptive. With so many options on the market today, it is important to fully understand side effects and benefits of each type.

The Pill

The phrase "The Pill" is used to refer to any type of birth control pill. There are over one dozen types of pills that are prescribed by doctors today. Some common brands are OrthoEvra Low, Yazmin, Seasonique, and Lutera. This prescription is filled monthly. You take a pill every day that increases specific hormones in your body to decrease the chance of pregnancy. It is important to take these at the same time every day for them to be most effective. There is one row of pills that are considered placebo pills, these do not contain hormones and trigger your body to menstruate. The pill's largest benefit is that it decreases acne in patients.

The Ring

NuvaRing is rapidly becoming one of the favorite choices in birth control. This is a flexible, vaginal ring that is inserted once a month. You do not need to visit a doctor for this. Insert the ring and leave it in for three weeks. At the end of the third week, remove the ring for one week and replace it with a new one. As of 2010 more than half of all health insurances are not covering NuvaRing, however that is likely to change in the future as it becomes more popular. The only way to know if your insurance covers it or not is by contacting them or looking over their prescription drug list.

Implanon & Mirena

Two long term choices in birth control are Implanon and Mirena. Implanon is a small (approximately 2 inches long), flexible rod that is injected into your arm. It slowly releases hormones over the course of three years. Mirena is a modern day IUD. These work by irritating the inside of the uterus to prevent it from releasing eggs. Each month you need to check the threads on Mirena, this is explained to you by your gynecologists. Mirena can last up to five years. Spotting may occur during the use of either of these methods. Some women experience a complete stop in bleeding all together. Both of these can also cause weight gain and acne.

The Shot & The Patch

The least relied upon forms of birth control are the Depovera Shot and the birth control patch. Patients receive the shot once every three months. It releases a level of hormones that trick the body into believing it is in menopause. Patients often experience spotting throughout the year. The shot is also associate with drastic weight gain in patients. The patch is a clear hormonal patch that can be placed on the arm, back of shoulder, lower back or abdomen. It releases a steady flow of hormones for one month and then is replaced with a new patch.

When someone mentions the word antibody, some people may know it is an immunology term, which is widely used in the biology and medical sciences. However, when someone mentions the word custom antibody, few people know it. In this article, I will give a brief introduction about custom antibody. In order to explain it clearly, I will give the definition of an antibody first.

1. What is an antibody?

An antibody is an immunoglobulin produced by a kind of white blood cell, which is called a plasma cell. It is a large Y-shaped protein in the immune system that responds to the presence of antigens like bacteria or viruses. Each antibody contains a specific "paratope" which can mark the specific "epitope" on the antigen. Under this binding mechanism, an antibody can resist or neutralize its target by other parts in the immune system.

2. When was the antibody discovered?

The custom antibodies were first mentioned in researches carried by scientists in the early 1980s. In order to speed up to explain Charles Darwin's theory of evolution, John Gribbin and Jeremy Cherfas, editors of New Scientist Magazine, brought forward a revolutionary method to study the human evolution. They extracted a blood serum protein and injected it into a rabbit. The body of the rabbit recognized the foreign protein and produced antibodies – these antibodies were specific to individual proteins.

3. How can custom antibodies help scientists?

They helped scientists to produce specific antibodies to adopt specific conditions, and the degree of the reaction indicates the extent of evolutionary relationship. This method can accelerate the speed of searching evolutionary tree of living beings and manufacturing proteins to fight disease. For example, if a patient was infected with a virus, his body will automatically produce an antibody. If the antibody is detected in time, doctors might be able to treat the patient and cure him before the virus spreads.

4. How to search for the proper one?

If you need a specific one, you can use online search engines. There are many custom antibodies suppliers which have been divided into three types. They are peptides, DNA and recombinant proteins. If you know the areas of specifically for companies that sell antibody products, go ahead to the company website straightforward to find the specific custom antibody.

After you read this article, you have gained enough information about it. When you search it online, you can find more information about it. However, be careful when you want to buy it. Now, go and have a try.

Healthcare service has turned out to be one of the largest industries for outsourcing- both in terms of income and work. Healthcare services involve doctor’s facilities, medical devices, clinical trials, outsourcing, telemedicine, restorative tourism, medical coverage and medical equipment. The global insurance interest in outsourcing has developed greatly in the current years because of the industry’s drive to lessen costs while as yet having the capacity to give quality healthcare services.

Earlier, the industry constrained their outsourcing to medical data entry and medical transcription. Yet, with the developing mindfulness that outsourcing has more prominent advantages for healthcare associations and doctor’s facilities, many are investigating into insurance data administration frameworks, clinical research, big data, medical billing, and IT to keep patient information secured among numerous others.

As indicated by Jonathan Clarke, Assistant Professor of Health Policy and Administration at Penn State University, “Outsourcing is something we ought to consider, particularly when it energizes proficiency and grows access to human services, however we should be canny about it so as not to put tolerant wellbeing at hazard.” He likewise expressed that around 90% of the doctor’s facilities in the United States are outsourcing a few services especially radiology benefit.

Four reasons the healthcare industry ought to contemplate outsourcing their non-restorative operations are:

Critical mistakes are avoided: – As per Tom Lowery in his article entitled 8 Ways Outsourcing Can Help Hospitals and Patients, US healing centres leave about $125 billion on the table every year as a result of poor medical billing practices. Also, 80% of hospital expenses contain blunders. One element that adds to this is a few hospitals are not updated with currently changing billing rules and regulations. With outsourcing, healthcare organisations can have a devoted group of prepared experts that spotlights on billing purposes.

Diminished training costs: – Healthcare organisations that outsource their procedures don’t likewise need to stress over spending additional cash for instruction, programming or staff preparing since the outsourcing accomplice sees to it that their representatives are fully informed regarding the most recent changes in benchmarks and controls.

More opportunity to concentrate on giving quality patient care:- With an outsourcing accomplice dealing with searching for a healthcare association’s staff and preparing them, healthcare providers have the capacity to concentrate on the more imperative things in the business – in this case, giving the best quality care for patients. Outsourcing will help providers to diminish their dull authoritative and overseeing workload, and permit them to give a positive patient care involvement and enhance it as well.

Save on cost without trading off quality of business: – The greatest favourable advantage of outsourcing is the lessened expenses in healthcare operations. Outsourcing brings in huge savings with its ease labour and framework. Healthcare services outsourcing can help spare organisations 30-60% of expenses. Besides dealing with staff obtaining and maintenance, having an outsourcing accomplice likewise decreases excess managerial costs since the immediate advantage of outsourcing is monetary surge.

If you want six-pack abs, then sit-ups are absolute waste of time.

In this article, I’ll show you 3 reasons why sit-ups absolutely suck when it comes to ab exercises… and I’ll recommend some better exercises instead.

First, let’s talk about the world’s most popular ab exercise sucks:

Problem #1: They’re too easy.

Except for those who are extremely out of shape, sit-ups are fairly easy. Most people can knock out 10, 20, or even 50 without too much trouble.

And in the fitness world, easy usually means ineffective. The truth is anything that’s easy doesn’t deliver results. The world record holder can do over 2,000 sit-ups in less than one hour! And shockingly, he doesn’t have great abs!

Problem #2: They can hurt your back.

Your spine is a magnificent piece of machinery. It can bend, curl and tuck without any issues. However, if your repeat the same motion thousands of times (like when you curl your truck when doing sit-ups) you can create some overuse injuries.

That’s why it’s better to find an abdominal exercise that delivers superior results with fewer repetitions. Not only will you save time, but you’ll save your back as well.

Problem #3: They don’t work.

In my younger days, I tried an experiment. I did 500 sit-ups every night for a full month. After a month, I’d completed over 15,000 sit-ups. And yet, my stomach didn’t look any different.

That’s a big waste of time in my book. Think about it: If you ball up your first and “make a muscle” will it make your biceps any bigger? Of course not, even if you do it a hundred times a day. That’s the same reason why doing 100 sit-ups or more every day wont’ give you better abs. Just flexing a muscle is not enough stimulation.

So if you want a better abdominal exercise, you need to find an exercise that 1) is not too easy 2) won’t hurt your back and 3) actually works.

Unfortunately, not too many abdominal exercises make the cut. In fact, most modern-day abdominal exercises are downright worthless. Luckily, there’s a few “old school” ab exercises you can use that will give you six-pack abs in no time (provided your eating strategy is sound.)

The first old-school ab exercise is the ab wheel roll-out. This exercise teaches your abdominals to work in conjunction with the rest of your body which results in a harder contraction and a more effective exercise.

Another good exercise is the hanging leg raise. Grab a chin-up bar, keep your legs straight and slowly raise your feet out in front of you up to your eye level. Move slowly and without using momentum.

If you’re not seeing the results you want from sit-ups, try skipping them for a month and utilizing these old school abdominal exercises for a change of pace.
