Do you have Radon in your home? That is the question that all homeowners in should know the answer to. The upper Midwest has some of the highest concentrations of radon in the country and that’s why home owners or home buyers for that matter should be aware. Most people don’t think they have radon because they can’t smell it, taste it, see it or touch it. It is silent and it is deadly.

So what is Radon? Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can penetrate your home and cause serious health risks to the whole family. Most soils contain uranium that, over time, decays to produce radium and polonium. Eventually, polonium is released with the radon, which creates a high toxicity level in the air and water that it infuses.

There is no model for how radon enters the house it is very persistent and most commonly enters the home through cracks in the slab, floor-wall joints exposed soil and sometimes even water from a well.

Exposure to radon gas increases your risk of developing lung cancer. According to the EPA an estimated 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States are due to radon exposure, which makes it the second leading cause of lung cancer following smoking. Radon gas and its decay products in the air are breathed into the lungs where they break down further and emit alpha particles. Alpha particles release a small burst of energy, which is absorbed by nearby lung tissue. This results in lung cell damage. While the effects of smoking cigarettes are far more recognizable when compared to the effects of radon exposure, there is very little separating the severity of these two potential dangers. How can smoking cigarettes be compared to radon exposure? Check this out!

1 pCi/L of radon is equal to 2.5 cigarettes a day! Multiply a home’s radon levels by 2.5 and understand that any homeowner could easily experience the effects of smoking a “pack a day” if the radon levels are at 4.0 pCi/L– the minimum action level established by the Environmental Protection Agency.

So now you know that radon is no joke, but how do find out if you have radon in your home. That’s the easy part. The American Lung Association, the EPA, and the Surgeon General recommend testing all homes for radon. Testing for radon is simple and relatively inexpensive.

There are several ways to test, but these three are probably the most common:

-A short-term kit allows you to get a basic reading in 48 hours, it’s like a quick snap shot of your situation. Radon test kits can be bought from your local Lowes or Hardware store. Once the test is done you simply mail the kit to the lab and they mail you the results.

-A CRM test stands for Continuous Radon Monitoring and this is done by contacting your local state certified Radon testing and radon mitigation specialist. You can find one on your county health department website. In this test they will set a small electronic monitor, a little smaller than a shoe box and garnish the results for you in 48 hours. This test is more live a movie rather than a snap shot because it takes a reading every hour and comes up with a pretty solid range.

-A Long-term tests remain in your home for more than 90 days. Alpha track and electric detectors are commonly used for this type of testing. A long-term test will give a more accurate annual average radon level than a short-term test for your home. The short-term and CRM method of testing are probably are more commonly used during the buying or selling of a home.

After all the testing is done and your radon levels are at 4.0 pCi/L– the minimum action level established by the Environmental Protection Agency or higher, radon mitigation will be the next step. Radon mitigation is a simple process typically, but should be done by a state certified radon professional. Each radon mitigation system design varies depending on the structure of your home. Homes are generally categorized according to their foundation design. The existence of a basement, crawl space, or …

Nowadays, a large number of people are entering home health care jobs. They are getting into these jobs because some people are experiencing a hard time taking care of their older loved ones. This is why they end up looking for home health care nurses that can do their duties instead.

There are many ways to find a home care assistant. Most of the time, home health care employees are found directly or via home care agencies. These agencies usually have staff like nurses and social workers that can cater to your needs. On the other hand, employing an independent home health care assistant is more effective because it gives you more power over the kind of assistance you want.

You should properly screen your prospect home care employee is he or she has sufficient training, personality and qualifications. You should completely discuss the needs of the senior recipient during the interview. It is also important for both of you to have a written copy of the job description and the nature of expertise you are searching for.

Before you employ the person, he or she should be knowledgeable and skilled with the following home health care services:

1. General health management including the giving or applying of medication and other medical care treatments.

2. Personal care like dressing, bathing, oral hygiene and shaving.

3. Nutrition assistance including the preparation of meals, feeding and even grocery shopping.

4. Household chores like dishwashing, laundry, and light housework.

These are the basic things you should require and conduct once you offer home care jobs. With these, you would get a qualified and reliable health care assistant. This way, you are assured that the senior will be cared for effectively and satisfactorily.

Fitness is a choice we make to live better, healthier lives. These days when too many people are leading sedentary lives and getting out of shape, getting fit has become a top priority for more and more people. But with so many choices, which total home fitness equipment should you get?

Here are some tips to help you decide which gym equipment can give you a total work out and help you achieve your fitness goals:

What do you really want?

Sometimes the best home fitness machine that can give you a total workout is as simple as a stationary bicycle or a treadmill. Get the home fitness machine that will work best for your own unique requirement and that will address the specific fitness concerns that you may have. Whether you want to lose weight or build muscles, there are different total fitness gym machines that can perform the right combination of tasks to get you where you want to go.

Measurable results

Aim for something that is tangible. If the machine you’re looking at promises to tone your thighs, then it should provide enough resistance to do so and not just some vague promise that it will give you long, lean muscles if you keep using it.

Try it for size

Check out the fitness machine and see how the bars and handles will fit into your hands and if the extensions can accommodate you’re the length of your legs. Even the simple treadmill comes in lengths that put your body size into consideration.

Consider comfort as one of your top requirements when choosing a home fitness machine. If there are too many demands on parts of your body like your back or knees, your fitness workout will have more negative repercussions than advantages.

No quick and empty promises

You’ve probably seen a lot of advertisements on TV and in the back of newspapers and magazines trumpeting the newest and best total fitness equipment that will surprise and satisfy you. The sad fact is, most of the time, the hype doesn’t equal the actual results.

Stay away from total home fitness gym equipment that promise too much, too many for a too short period of time. There’s a good chance that these promises are empty or at best, temporary. If your home fitness equipment works, then it should do so gradually and permanently.

Price

The cost of a total fitness home gym machine can go as little as $800 and as high as over $3,000. Which one you choose will really depend on your budget and fitness goals. And while it may seem a small matter, the size of your available space at home will also figure in your choice. Some home gym machines are bulky and heavy and will need dedicated space if you want to use them efficiently.

Use

A total fitness home gym machine should accommodate the number of users you have in the house. It should also be easy to assemble and allow you to make quick changes in the resistance or weight if necessary. Some home gym machines even allow simultaneous users for different workout stations. This way, you can enjoy a fitness workout with other members of the family.

For a total body workout, a home gym equipment as simple as a rowing machine will perform well. Choose the right resistance for your fitness level and it will work out your upper and lower arms, back, thighs and legs. It’s low impact and will not be too harsh on your knees.

If you’re already reasonably fit and want to build muscles, you might want to try a universal gym like Tuff Stuff’s CFM-555 or BodyCraft Family Xpress home gym. These are the type of home fitness machines that offer a lot in terms of exercise variety. Plus, you get to build strength and muscles with the weight stack that comes with each set. Depending on the model, you can get a basic set with maximum 200-lb. weight stacks.

A compact home gym like the 500HG from True may also be a good choice. It’s very affordable (price range starts at about $800) and offers a lot in terms of flexibility and exercise …

Mirrors, mirrors, mirrors… One thing that you’ll notice about any health club is that they’re full of mirrors! In the weight room, change room, cardio room and everywhere else you’ll find walls of large, full length mirrors. Mirrors allow members to view their reflection and inspect their exercise form, and determine whether they’re progressing with their workout program. Mirrors for home gyms are less common, but they can serve as a valuable evaluation and motivational tool as well.

Exercising in your home gym that is equipped with mirrors allow you to view your exercise form to make sure that it is correct. With a mirror you can visually determine whether you’re cheating during an exercise, rounding your back or anything else that you shouldn’t be doing. As you’re performing your set, a mirror provides a visual feedback where you can check your form and posture, and make any necessary corrections. If you’re exercising at home and you don’t have a mirror, it can be difficult to determine this by feel alone.

Mirrors in your home gym can also serve as a tool to track your progress. Consistently working out over time will produce noticeable results, and if you see that in the mirror, you’ll be more motivated to push harder! You can always wait until you’re finished your exercises and look at yourself in the bathroom mirror, but this does not have the same effect compared to seeing yourself in the mirror while working out. Additionally, just seeing your muscles pumped from lifting weights and noticing the progress you’ve made inspires and motivates you to keep on going.

Overall, a mirror in your home workout room can help you with your form during exercise, allow you to visually track your progress and motivate you to achieve greater results. Don’t workout at home without one!

When you become the owner, manager or administrator of a home health agency people look up to you for leadership, to clarify, and guide them in the right direction, even if they don’t ask for it they do want it. When I was thrust into a leadership position a few years back, I kept looking for someone who could guide me and show me “the ropes.” I started reading as many leadership books that I could get my hands on. However, what helped me the most was watching leaders and mentors such as Oprah, Tony Robbins, Les Brown, and a bunch of unknown leaders in various professions in action. YouTube is great for having easy access to top leaders in the world.

I found that it was hard to find a person in a leadership position who would take the time to show me the ropes. Huh! I had to learn the hard way through many trials and errors. I finally understood that in some industries there is no emphasis on the concept of mentoring and coaching the” newbies”. You are on your own, especially if you need help in the home health industry.

So many home health agencies are in need of having an experienced director of clinical services on board, that they are now hiring nurses with no experience in home health that can jeopardize the success of the agency. Having the right person and processes in place is crucial to meet the state and federal requirements. Thus, having someone with great leadership skills, experience and knowledge is becoming ever more important in the home health industry.

What about Homecare (Personal care) Agencies?

While homecare agencies are not required to have a Director of Clinical Services, the Manager still need have specific qualifications required by the state regulations.

As a first-time Administrator, Manager, Owner, or Director of Clinical Services, here are a few strategies that any leader can use to be successful.

1. Be a first-class Listener

To be a good listener you must be present. This means to be physically or mentally focused on what is being said and not being distracted by everything that is happening around you. Being a good listener will make you more appreciative of what the other person has to say. You will be more effective in problem solving. Listening to your staff may take a lot of practice, consistency, and effort on your behalf, especially if you don’t agree with what that person has to say. We must remind ourselves of the benefits to listening more than talking. We must not judge the employee who is speaking, and look at the situation from their point of view.

2. Be a Better Communicator

Being a leader who can successfully communicate will be key to your success. Great communication skills should be a required for all agency owners, managers, or administrators. This is one skill that will vastly improve over time with practice.

3. Have a Vision For Your Agency

A great leader should have a clear and exciting vision for the future of their agency. This vision should be clear to everyone working for your agency, your clients, and business associates. What are your goals for the agency? Share those goals with people who matter and can help your goals manifest.

4. Find a Great Leader to Emulate

As I mentioned before, when I first started out on my journey as a leader, I was looking for someone who would serve as a role model and good leader. Of course, there wasn’t anyone in the home health or healthcare industry for me to emulate. Who do you know that is a successful leader as a home health administrator, owner, or manager? Good question huh! Since our choices are very limited, we have to emulate people from other industries to guide us to success and prosperity.

A leader that can demonstrate their commitment to being persistent, honest, take risks, and discover ways to develop creative solutions will be successful in growing a very profitable business.

Being a great leader will not happen overnight but by simply doing these 4 things you can start to learn a lot about yourself and what good leaders …

With so many different fitness programs in the market today it does become difficult to filter out the bad ones. You can find programs ranging from overall fitness health, to precisely picking programs for just six pack abs, which is a major market. Lets see what makes a plan the best home fitness program.

A good health plan will include a full range of exercises you can do in the comfort of your own home. It will illustrate key workouts you can do during your free time and without needing a gym membership. When you are picking the fitness plan you want to follow try to pick one that doesn't require a membership of any sort, and pick one that requires the least amount of equipment.

Just because we're talking about fitness doesn't mean we need an entire home gym, there are good fitness routines that don't even require anything except your own focus and determination. I like training programs that only require 1 or 2 piece of equipment. For example, I find Mike Geary's fitness program very valuable because it gives you an outline of which workouts work best, especially for getting six pack abs. Tom Venuto also has a good fitness plan, however I find it difficult to read and understand.

My vote for the best home fitness program has to go to Mike Geary's program. Simply because it's discreet, to the point, with no fluff. Try this health plan for 1 week:

1. Workout your upper body 2 days a week
2. Workout your lower body 2 days a week
3. Workout your core 2 days a week

I find this plan adequate, it's vital to have 1 full day of rest because your body needs to recover and build.

Who is home fitness for?

Focus on putting together a solid home fitness plan if you’re looking to get better physical conditioning and improve the shape of your body. It doesn’t matter the age or ability of the individual, anyone can put together a basic workout focusing on three components to show results. Stick with cardiovascular conditioning, strength performance, and stretching to increase functional ability.

Increasing your cardio endurance doesn’t mean you have to use a machine or have a wide open space. A good running program (slow or fast) can be achieved with a pair of running shoes. For those looking for a piece of equipment to aid them in their cardio workout, they have a good amount of options. A few types of devices to pick from are:rowers, treadmills, bikes, and gliders.

Strength training can be accomplished with body weight movements or various forms of weighted resistance from an array of equipment. A good home fitness schedule hits the major muscle groups at least one time in the course of a weekly workout.

Body weight resistance exercise routines can be as basic as push-ups,squats, and core conditioning or you might want to make it a little more challenging by using various types of equipment like a pull up bar or a weighted vest.

The general pieces of weight exercise devices are a barbell and weights with a flat workout bench. For those with limited space, the use of adjustable dumbbells or adjustable kettlebells will work just as effectively. Strength workouts routines use a variety of equipment to get the greatest benefits.

Stretching is one area of a fitness plan most individuals put very little time into or don’t do it at all. The greatest results from working out will come from incorporating stretching into your weekly workouts and it shouldn’t be overlooked.

Regardless of your flexibility, everyone can receive the benefits of increased range of movement, reduced tension in muscles, and muscular coordination. Yoga and Pilates are two types of stretching programs that can be all-encompassing workouts on there own.

Why home fitness

Home fitness will provide the same results as any franchise gym center at the fraction of the cost and on the time schedule you set. No more hurry to make it to the gym to get a fast workout in before it closes. Stop paying monthly dues for equipment or programs you don’t even use.

Most gym programs require a signed contract that commits members to up to a year of expensive monthly dues that are taken even if you don’t use the facility for a month or more.

Trying to make it to the gym to get a last-minute workout in before it closes can be a hassle. Not to mention the time wasted and workout ruined from waiting to use a specific machine when the gym is busy.

Other areas of home fitness to consider

Nutrition is a substantial component of home fitness and when worked into the plan correctly, can provide high levels of energy and beneficial stress relief throughout the day. Following a basic plan of small healthy meals with sensible snacks will keep the energy levels up over a long period of time.

Eating lean portions of meat and having a serving of vegetables with each meal will give you a good proportion of needed nutrients. Fruits and nuts are a good alternative for bad snack choices. The last thing you want is to do is sabotage a healthy meal plan with garbage.

Lack of water consumption can kill workout performance and make it extremely hard to progress with results. While it is advisable to drink water before, during, and post workout, it is also important to drink it in moderate amounts during the day.

Adjust the amount of water you need by monitoring you activity level throughout the day. If you want your body to function properly make sure to drink plenty of water.

Don’t underestimate the role rest plays in allowing the body to adapt and repair itself for the next workout. A good rule to follow is to get a minimum of two days rest from a home fitness workout during a week period with the days off being staggered or …

Improving physical fitness at home is an excellent idea that can be achieved through exercise only. Regular exercise can extend your life expectancy to a certain degree and keep you fit and evergreen throughout your life.

Improving fitness is not that hard if you maintain a healthy lifestyle. A disciplined lifestyle can throw away most diseases and ailments. It improves your endurance and boost energy level. No matter how physically fit you are, you can start to follow a disciplined life. Depending on your ability start exercising on a regular basis. But to do so, you must have to fix your goal. Here I unveiled eight secrets to be looked smart and fit.

Inspiration and Motivation Can Change You

Most of us feel lethargic throughout the day, especially when asked to do some hard work this is because of lack of physical activity and motivation that slow down our metabolic rate. Have you noticed that sportsmen look so smart and energetic than average people? I suggest you to select an iconic power sport personal and admire his or her talent. The concept of staying fit and fine doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to regularly visit the gym. Practically there are hundreds of ways to stay evergreen like a sport man.

Walk Like an Ostrich

Twenty first century surprised us offering big tummy and polished hairless head. No matter how huge you are, wake up in the morning and start walking as far as you can. Do not forget to use a pedometer that can count your steps and can say the distance you covered. Please do not move like a tortoise chatting with your friends. Walk as fast as possible until you feel a big drop of sweat hanging on the edge of your nose. But if you already developed any sort of cardiac disease, do not walk too fast, maintain a moderate speed.

You Are a Great Runner!

Experience your athletic endurance. Running regularly for at least two kilometers is good for the heart. It’s a great cardio exercise that increases our heart rate to an extreme level and burn out more fats than any other form of exercise. If you don’t have any cardiac problem you are free to run, but if you are suffering from cardiac disease like hypertension, then avoid running to stay fit, because there are many other ways I will tell you latter through which you can have the similar effect without putting extra stress on the heart.

Tales of Gym Addicts

Mentally you may be fitter than a gym goer, but in reality you never felt that. Doing intensive cardio exercise at the gym may help you to get a tummy-less trimmed physique. The good news for you that you can perform cardio exercises at home also, in that case you can use a gym cycle and treadmill. I recommend you to drink some engineered energy drink that can improve your performance for a long period of time. After practicing vigorously (if you don’t have cardiovascular disease) fold your treadmill and keep it aside. Cardiac patients should not run on the treadmill without doctor’s advice.

Yoga Can Stretch Your Mind

This is probably the easiest way to stay fit at home because most of us have almost no time to spend over wellness of mind and body at a health club or on the field. Physical fitness doesn’t necessarily mean huge biceps and eight pack abdomen muscle. Today’s biggest problem is indigestion, acidity and light headedness. Yoga is very helpful to regain your lost energy. This is a powerful method to improve concentration and physical ability and vigor. Yoga can cure most diseases and gives you an evergreen look. But practicing yoga at home may be sometimes difficult, but not impossible though. As a beginner, you can take a lesson from a yoga guru. The power of yoga can essentially boost your sex drive and keep you looking younger than average people.

Quit Smoking

If you are really determined to improve your physical fitness then as soon as possible quit smoking by throwing the packet in the dustbin. At the same time stay away from other bad habits like getting sobered at …
