In an effort to promote health and wellness, as well as bring a slice of championship golf to the desert, and instill the idea of participating in improving the quality of life, the PGA along with Humana has teamed up with the Clinton Foundation to present the newly christened Humana Challenge.

Formerly known as the Bob Hope Classic, the Humana Challenge spanned 9 days from January 14th to the 22nd with a host of events lined up along with the involvement of the 42nd President of the United States William J. Clinton. With a new trophy, a new format and a new name, the Humana Challenge took part at the PGA West Golf Club in La Quinta, CA that involved players, spectators and viewers in a variety of activities and events that circled around the theme of lifelong well-being.

On Saturday the 14th the event kicked off with the Humana Wellness walk along the Bear Creek Trail along with a Healthy Fun Fair that took place in Palm Desert that provided a number of interactive activities as well as valuable information on health and wellness. Sunday brought the Humana Farmer’s Market at Old town La Quinta where I was able to sample some of the delicious veggies and fruits that lines the streets and allowed myself to share some friendly words and smiles with the large gathering of food seeking people. The festivities continued on Monday with spectators being welcomed to come out to one of the three courses and catch some practice rounds from the pros or watch the Bob Hope Legacy Pro Am that took place on the PGA West Nicklaus Private course.

Tuesday presented the Kickoff Breakfast at the La Quinta Chamber of Commerce followed by the Clinton Foundation Conference with the keynote speaker being former president Bill Clinton with the topic centered on Activating Wellness in Every Generation. Then it was time to play some golf.

Starting on Thursday professional golfers such as Phil Mickelson, Greg Norman, Anthony Kim, David Toms, Stuart Appleby, Justin Leonard, David Duval, Rich Been and defending champion Jhonattan Vegas tee’d off along with celebrities like Alice Cooper, Morgan Freeman, Billy Crudup, Michael Bolton, Smokey Robinson, Don Cheadle, and the legendary basketball hall of famer Julius Erving who is better known as Doctor J.

The four day tournament played the first three rounds in a pro-am format. Each team consisted of one pro and one amateur playing in groups of four, with the amateurs competing in daily competitions as well as overall.

The final round was professionals only. The field size expanded 16 professional spots from the previous format making it 144 professionals along with 144 amateurs. The number of courses used in rotation was reduced from four to three. Those three were the La Quinta Country Club, PGA West Nicklaus Private, and PGA West Palmer Private. So along with the golf action that took place throughout the week, the Humana Challenge presented a number of activities that were designed to play a key role in the way we all strive to live healthier lives.

The government has issued new PE objectives to schools indicating that they must increase their structured PE during school time to every child by 2010. They also have to provide an additional 2 hours of out of school PE by 2014. By using real life case studies from successful instructors who are leading the field in developing regular ETM classes and strategies for schools this article explains how to present yourself as an expert, understanding all school ‘s love for acronyms and coding systems and pinpoint who to approach within schools .

Diversification has to be the buzz word in the fitness industry right now. There are so many avenues for the discerning fitness professional to go down within group fitness. These niche markets are in desperate need of the qualified Group Fitness Instructors skills, expertise and knowledge. No longer is teaching in a health club or sports centre the only option. Classes in the community, GP referrals, corporate venues, children, teens and the plus sized market are all MASSIVE opportunities and are relatively untapped areas. We need to start making significant steps towards finding solutions and creating specific programmes for these target groups.

Teaching fitness to children is not the same as teaching to adults so you will need to do a specialist teaching qualification (see the end of this article for course information) as an add onto your existing qualification. Remember you will not be insured to teach under 16’s unless you have a separate specialist qualification. You will also be required to be CRB checked but I am sure your school will be able to help you with this.

But how do you approach schools? who do you approach in schools? and how does it all work?

Liz is a fully qualified group fitness teacher and I asked her what motivated her to make the push into schools:

“A family friend, a local PDM, was concerned that schools in his partnership were falling short of the 2 hours structured PE that is a Government requirement for 2010, particularly at Key Stage 1. Luckily, you can adhere to your healthy eating plan with a little extra work. These 8 tips for healthy eating while traveling provide some solid ideas to staying on track while on the go.

1. Location – When you’re choosing where to stay, it’s all about location. Let’s say you’re traveling for work and you’ll be in the same location for at least a few days. Finding a spot that’s close to healthy resources is key. Is there a grocery store nearby that you can run to for healthy snacks and/or meals? Are there healthy cafes or restaurants within walking distance that you can stop in for a bite to eat? It’s easy to make the excuse that you can’t eat healthy while on the road if there aren’t good options around you. Don’t make that your excuse. Choose as wisely as you can to set yourself up for success.

2. Accommodations With A Kitchen or Kitchenette – One of the best ways to ensure healthy eating while traveling is to have access to some type of kitchen. I agree whole-heartedly with the saying “Health Is Wealth”. If a person is not healthy then he or she will find it very difficult or even impossible to enjoy life, even though he or she may be very rich.

If I am asked to choose one from two of the following things, which will I prefer: health without wealth, or, wealth without health? Without hesitation I will choose the former. There is no doubt.

Wealth is generally associated with how much money a person has, that is, how rich he is. An uncle of mine is very rich. He has just about everything anyone can hope for, and some things no one dares to hope for. That is how rich he is. He lives in a huge mansion guarded by huge dobermans and sophisticated burglar alarms. He has expensive cars, furniture, paintings and other rich man’s toys. Well, he has everything except good health.

Everywhere he goes he carries with him a bag of medicine. He has to take pills everyday for his weak heart, diabetes and hypertension. He is about sixty years old and has spent his life accumulating wealth. Without doubt he has succeeded in becoming very rich. However he has also succeeded in becoming very unhealthy too. He laments about his lack of health and says that how he wished that he was young and healthy again. Unfortunately, he cannot regain his health again.

This example of wealth without health is not what I want to follow. It is ridiculous to have so much material wealth but being unable to enjoy it. What is the use of money when one has to take so much medicine everyday just to stay alive? How can one enjoy life when one’s body is weakened by disease and pain? No wonder my uncle laments so.

Health without wealth is far better. That is what I have now. I do not have to worry even a bit about what I can eat or do. I eat and do what I like because my body is healthy. Of course I do not abuse it by taking drugs or overexerting myself. I take good care of my body. In that way I stay healthy.

With health I can go about my work with joy. If I become rich, then that is fine. Then again, I may lose my riches, but that is all right too. I can always do the things I enjoy whether I am rich or not. I can play games, swim in the sea, climb hills, eat delicious fruits and appreciate the things of this beautiful Earth. This is indeed wealth – to be healthy and joyous.
