Do we really need another nature poster in our life? Probably. The fact is, many of us work in offices, or an environment that’s not overly natural, whereas a fortunate few of us do have an office set up in a natural setting.

And my guess is, that’s what a lot of us are aiming for. Somewhere in our dreams of how we see our life unfolding, we hold mental pictures of us in nature or in a natural environment. This might be a farm, or even indoor garden, anywhere where we can get that necessary direct contact with nature.

But how can a nature poster help us?

More and more, research is pointing to the value of direct contact with nature, informing us that it leads to increased mental health and psychological development and explains why city-dwellers have such an attraction for nature.

Cities have their place. And when we get out of the city we can appreciate nature even more. Nature allows us to free up our senses more, reduce stress, relax and enjoy the tranquility of it all.

I feel inspired when I look at a nature poster…

That’s right. Research shows that a window view of nature (rather than a built environment)… improves work performance in job settings, and increases job satisfaction. (This may also help explain the predominance of posters and picture calendars with nature scenes on walls of windowless office cubicles).

So there you have it. And of course, a nature poster is often very beautiful to look at, so that’s a positive aspect. We can’t all be hanging out in national parks or on Antartic ice caps or on the top of Mount Kilamanjaro. There’s just too many of us! For most of us, the concept of doing such a thing is way too big anyway.

So next best is to get a visual picture of what we know exists, what we often find to be profound and truly amazing. Viewing a nature poster bring us back to a humble, awe like state where often we can grasp an appreciation for just how magnificent and incredible we are, and nature is. In fact, it’s one and the same, but that’s another story.

Nature experiences increase fascination, intrinsic interest, and enjoyment. The wilderness inspires feelings of awe and wonder… individuals feel better acquainted with their own thoughts and feelings, and they feel ‘different’ in some way — calmer, at peace with themselves, ‘more beautiful on the inside and unstifled.’

So where were we? Ah that’s right, nature posters. For a moment then, I was completely zoned out in some beautiful, misty zen Japanese garden! You can’t get too much of this stuff. Obviously we all need it, and it’s a part of us. A nature poster gives us the ability to connect, to go there, to travel to a place of wonder and beauty.

I know, it’s just a poster. But surely if it moves us in some way, be it just briefly, it can motivate us to move towards our dreams and realization of our goals. A nature poster is certainly inspiring. How many times have you heard yourself saying wow I want to do that or I want to go there?

And you can, if you really want to! And just think – we see in pictures. So by looking at a nature poster maybe you can imagine, or see yourself in a similar environment, or doing something you’ve always wanted to do.

Or of course just enjoy the sheer pleasure of the moment!

Have fun. And when you come back, tell me.

Most Indians have close encounters of the culinary kind with Fenugreek or methi seeds very early in life. These seeds are remarkably bitter and have a marvellous aroma when roasted or fried in a little oil.

How did we start using these seeds, bitter as they are?

Fenugreek down history lane

Apparently, in the 1st century AD, the Romans flavoured wine with fenugreek. The use of fenugreek /methi in India is probably older than history itself; the leaves and the seeds of the herb are well entrenched in Indian cuisines from all parts of the country.

In West Bengal, for instance, methi seeds are used as ‘paanch phoron,’ one of five spices that are used to temper dishes. In fact, the aroma of these little mustard-coloured cuboids makes them a popular choice for the tempering of dals and chutneys. Methi seeds are also used whole or powdered in sambar powder in South India, and pickles in all parts of India.

Modern miracle seed

Fenugreek seeds were always around in Indian kitchens and traditional medicine cabinets. But in recent times, there has been a steady stream of information about the health benefits of fenugreek seeds as many people have ‘adopted’ this seed and reaped health benefits.

The most popular way of consuming fenugreek seeds is to boil them in water. This softens the seeds and releases their nutrients. It also reduces their extreme bitterness so that they are easier to chew and swallow. This requires a little getting used, of course, but the benefits far outstrip the initial distaste.

Fenugreek in water

Soaking fenugreek in water is recommended because it has water soluble minerals and fibre.

There are two ways to make methi/fenugreek water:

Soak 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in 2 glasses, about 400ml, of water overnight.

Put 2 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in a flask at bedtime. Add 2 glasses of boiling water into the flask. Screw on the lid. Let the seeds soak the whole night. Drink the water first thing in the morning. Chew up the seeds and swallow.

The second method is convenient and healthier. Of course, the seeds are bitter, but you will get used to it. After all, coffee and tea are bitter too; yet we drink them with devotion!

Health benefits of drinking ‘fenugreek water’:

Very beneficial to people with diabetes: Fenugreek encourages the slower absorption of sugars and also stimulates insulin. Diabetics and people on the borderline of diabetes will reap many benefits in drinking warm fenugreek water. Fenugreek seeds can also be powdered and added to dishes like idlis and dosas.

Aids digestion: Fenugreek seeds have mucilage, and the soaking process makes them mucilaginous. They coat and soothe the stomach and intestines. This property also makes fenugreek seeds a good choice for helping patients with acid reflux.

The water soluble fibre in fenugreek helps to relieve constipation.

Because of their anti-inflammatory properties, fenugreek seeds and water have been successfully incorporated into diets to treat ulcerative colitis.

Advantageous to kidney health: Fenugreek water, especially when drunk warm, flushes out the toxins from the body. That is why it is recommended as your wake-up elixir. It helps the kidneys to function and also reduces the risk of kidney stones.

Good for clear skin: Beautiful skin is never just skin-deep! Since fenugreek water aids in digestion and the flushing of toxins, it’s great for shiny, healthful, blemish-free skin. This is the beauty secret of the savvy few. Try it and join the club.

Slimming with this ‘magic water’: Experts recommend two glasses of warm fenugreek water to prevent water retention in the body. So, no bloating! Fenugreek also suppresses the appetite. In fact, dieticians recommend drinking this magic potion at least twice a day.

Anti-inflammatory: Because of the anti-inflammatory properties of fenugreek, this decoction benefits sufferer from arthritis, chronic coughs, bronchitis, mouth ulcers, boils, etc.

Keeps your heart beating: This is the reason why chewing and swallowing the fenugreek seeds is recommended in addition to drinking the water. Fenugreek reduces the risk of cardio-vascular disease by controlling LDL cholesterol.

Fenugreek seeds are a woman’s good friend: Fenugreek contains diosgenin which helps decrease menstrual cramps and increase the flow of milk in lactating mothers.

How …

There has always been a debate for decades over whether cardio training or strength training is better for you. The reality is you need both. Your body will not depend on just a single branch of exercise to work. Cardio and strength workouts come with their own set of benefits, and each supports the other and enhances your overall fitness performance. It is suggested that adults perform at least 30 minutes of aerobic activity daily, and engage in strength training at least twice per week. These recommendations from the American Heart Association suffice for 30 minutes per day, or 150 minutes per week, of physical related activity which can be easy as going for a run around the block and hitting the gym with some weights.

Benefits of strength training
Weight training builds big muscle and helps to strengthen the connective tissues in your body, and that goes far towards injury prevention. Not only will it help with everyday chores and aging bodies but you'll also improve your posture, balance, and stability. Weight training helps shape your body and metabolizes fat faster. Following strength training, your metabolism remains higher for an elongated period of time (unlike cardio which halts as soon as your heart rate drops), in return burning more calories after your workout. Furthermore muscle expends more energy to maintain than fat does, so in return you'll burn more calories while at rest by adding some muscle to your frame.

Benefits of cardio training
Cardio training improves your body's ability to process and use a higher content of oxygen, increases your lungs capacity, and improves your overall fitness level to help you live longer and have a healthier heart. Even when the top body builders started to train they began to recognize the high level of importance of adding cardiovascular training into their workouts aiding them in increased blood-flow to the muscles as well as speeding the muscle breakdown healing process and recovery through workouts. Cardio training elevates your heart rate in the short term, with benefits like lower blood pressure and a decreased resting heart rate, which results in less effort for the heart and any future diseases.

A properly designed and rounded workout routine comes with an abundance of mental and physical benefits. Exercise releases endorphin's under stress, which helps aid stress, tension and anxiety, as well as increasing blood flow to the brain, to help you function at higher levels. Risks of illnesses like diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and certain types of cancer can be decreased by performing healthy related activities. Exercise helps maintain muscle mass and strengthen bone density, both of which decline as we age. Staying active will not only give us a better way of life but a longer and healthier one.

With the news that Metis are considered by the Canadian government in the same way as First Nations and Inuit people, everyone wants to know what benefits the Metis get. People who suspect they are “part Indian” want to find out for sure and get their Metis Status card, but there is so much conflicting information, it’s hard to find the right answers.

Pride

Getting Metis Status is a way of showing pride for your ancestors and their hard work in the beginning of the first economy of North America, that of the fur trade. Considering that it’s the Native women who did most of the work, it’s time we all honor our great grandmothers and the sacrifices they made for all our benefit.

Community

Metis Status gives access and fellowship to our extended kinship community. Because Metis groups can only apply for government funding based on the membership of their registry, getting a Metis Status card helps our communities in so many ways. Without membership, Metis communities will not get funds. Every person who stands up and gets their Metis Status card helps to build what was lost during generations of hiding our identity.

Because most of the fur traders were French, their unions with Native women represent a majority of Metis in North America. Most people who grew up in a French Canadian town or village don’t even realize how much of their culture is actually Metis, nor that they have fur traders in their ancestry, nor how many people in their community descend from Native Americans. Getting a card with the organization that represents your type of ancestry is not like being in a club, it’s about being part of a family and community.

Getting a Metis Status card means your genealogy has been verified to be true and accurate. It is proof that you actually are “part Indian”. Which card you have describes the cultural community you belong to.

Programs

Social programs are varied and can include health programs, health studies for particular hereditary diseases, cultural learning programs, assistance programs, cultural and heritage workshops, improvement incentives, work programs, help with housing, family programs (baby wellness, family counselling, etc) preservation of heritage and culture, etc. Funding for programs depends on agreements with Canadian government and the numbers of registered members of an organization.

Representation and Rights

Some groups would like harvesting rights, hunting or fishing rights, or even the access to harvest plant material. Rights to any of these are determined by agreements signed between the government and the individual organization. There are many different organizations that represent many different groups of Metis. Being Metis or having a card does not entitle you to automatic rights. Standing up and being counted by getting a Status card better helps these groups negotiate rights on your behalf. So right now, you cannot go hunting or fishing just because you have a Metis card, unless your group tells you there are agreements to do so, and the way in which the activity must be carried out.

We do not know what the future holds for anyone. In our communities today, there are some areas where people are not allowed to harvest certain plant materials. Having Metis Status with a particular organization might mean your community has a voice for negotiation of rights — for now, and for the future.

Education

Considering Native Americans have traditionally had a lower number of high school, college and university graduates than the average population, and Native Americans have traditionally been under-represented in the labor force, and Native Americans are the fastest growing group of people, the government now understands that they will need training as they will be a major pool for the labor force in the future. For all these reasons, the government is encouraging educational institutions to make accommodation for aboriginal persons, whether they be First Nations, Inuit, or Metis.

Having a Metis Status card can help secure a place in a particular educational program, for example at college or university. Considering that Metis families’ ancestors helped to build the economy of this continent, and then had to hide their identity for generations or have rights taken away, and considering that these …

Antioxidants, pH and alkalinity are terms that are being used more and more when it comes to health benefits. However, most people are confused by these terms, let alone how they relate to your health.

First off, I will give you a simple description of each of these terms: Antioxidants, pH and alkalinity. Then I will summarize for you what this means to your health as well as what you can do to fight disease and illness. And finally, I will give you a free eBook that will give you an even better understanding of these terms, and the role they play on your health as well as a simpler way to help you achieve optimum health by drinking the right kind of water and eating the right kinds of foods.

  • Antioxidants are molecules that protect you from environmental factors such as pollution, the sun, and toxins in your food and water. Antioxidants are substances such as vitamins C and E, beta carotene and selenium that slow the aging process and give your body the tools to heal already damaged cells. “Anti-oxidants” are the opposite of “oxidants.” Oxidants create unstable molecules called “free radicals” that cause damage to your cells and DNA which in turn lead to disease and premature aging. Oxidation is the rust on a pipe or what happens to an apple after you cut it and leave it out on the counter- it oxidizes, the apple turns brown, it starts to rot. Oxidation leads to disease! The more “antioxidants” you can get the better off you are! Add antioxidants and alkalinity and you have the keys to live a disease-free life.
  • Ph stands for “potential hydrogen” and is a value measured on the Ph scale from 0.0-14.0 with 7.0 being neutral. Any number under 7.0 is acidic, and any number above 7.0 is alkaline. Ph is simply a measure of how acid or alkaline a substance is. People test their swimming pools, fish aquariums, ponds, and soil for Ph and alkalinity levels. You need to test your body fluids. If its important for fish and soil then its important for you. After all your body is 70% water. Most people take better care of their fish than they do their own bodies.
  • Alkalinity is the opposite of acidic. It has a Ph above 7.0 (neutral). It has the ability to buffer and neutralize acids. The higher the Ph measurement of a certain alkaline substance the more buffering or neutralizing power it has on acid. The main thing to know is that Alkalinity neutralizes acids and that leads to a healthier you. You can begin to achieve alkalinity by eating primarily alkaline foods and drinking alkaline water. Alkaline foods are also typically high in antioxidants as well.

All food, when eaten, metabolizes into acid in your body. Pollution, pesticides on your food and other contaminants also metabolize into acid. Too much acid creates an environment that invites disease and allows disease to thrive in your body. An acidic environment feeds disease making it virtually worse and impossible to get rid of. You can find pH test strips online or at your local drug store. Test your urine and saliva for alkalinity to see just how acidic you are. Your body pH should range from 6.5 to 7.0 pH throughout the day. Eat foods and drink water high in alkalinity and antioxidants.

Strength Training

If you want to change your overall look and become more tone, then the importance of strength training should not be underestimated. Strength training has been proven to benefit young athletes to seniors. Women, in particular, see tremendous benefits from strength training. . If you desire that “ripped” look, then strength training is absolutely vital if you want to change the visual appearance of your body. Another added benefit is that strength training creates strong muscle and strengthens ligaments and tendons, which serve to support our joints and decrease the possibility of injury from other activities.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could burn more calories throughout the day, even while relaxing? Well, you can make this happen if you strength train. The fact is, the more muscle mass you possess, the more calories you will naturally burn. So get up and start pumping that iron. Don’t forget that muscle weighs approximately 3 times more than fat, so if you have embarked on a fitness regimen of strength training, cardio exercise and a healthy diet don’t be dismayed if the scale goes up instead of down. A good way to measure your progress is by using a tape measure to keep track of your results. Measure your arms, thighs, waist, hips, and calves and keep a weekly log of your progress.

The proper selection of strength training equipment depends on several factors including, age, fitness goals, health, and budget. One of the most common questions in the fitness industry today is whether to perform strength training using free weights or machines.

Free Weight Equipment

The major advantage of free weights is that they are more efficient in strengthening the whole body. You can perform a wide variety of upper and lower body exercises using just a set of dumbbells. A …

In this article, we are going to talk about a few medical benefits of marijuana that you can enjoy if you have a medical prescription. In other words, we are going to shed some light on the positives on the basis of scientific research. Marijuana is not recommended for recreational purposes.

According to researchers, the herb can help with the treatment of absent-mindedness, malaria, gout, and rheumatism, just to name a few. Now, let’s talk about some of the prominent benefits of this herb.

1. Cancer Treatment

According to a study published in Molecular Cancer Therapeutics, marijuana can help fight cancer. Another study found that CBD can also curb the growth of cancer cells in the body.

The researchers at the American Association for Cancer Research say that the herb does a good job of slowing down the growth of tumors in the lungs, breasts, and brain.

2. Prevents Alzheimer’s Disease

CBD has a powerful ingredient called THC that helps control the Alzheimer’s disease, says the research that was done at the Scripps Research Institute. Also, THC can curb the growth of amyloid plaques as it tends to block the plaque-producing enzymes. You may get Alzheimer’s disease if your brain cells get killed by the plaques.

3. Treats Glaucoma

CBD may also help treat glaucoma. Actually, marijuana reduces pressure in your eyes, which helps protect your eyeball.

4. Relieves Arthritis

According to a 2011 research study, researchers concluded that cannabis can help patients get rid of pain and swelling. As a result, patients with rheumatoid arthritis can get enough sleep.

5. Treats Epileptic Seizure

Another study done in 2003 found that the herb can be used to treat epileptic seizures as well. An experiment done on rats gave enough evidence that CBD does prevent seizures for up to 10 hours. Actually, THC binds the cells in the brain that are responsible for triggering seizures.

6. Helps with Parkinson’s Disease

Many studies were done in Israel to find out the benefits of marijuana for patients with Parkinson’s disease. The study found that the drug can help ease the pain, which helps patients improve their sleep. The patients consumed the herb also enjoyed better motor skills.

7. Helps with Crohn’s Disease

Cannabis is also a good choice for patients with Crohn’s disease. This disease causes pain and inflammation in the intestines. Patients also experience pain, weight loss, diarrhea, and nausea.

In Israel, studies were done to find out if this disease can be controlled with cannabis. And the results were positive. More than 90% of the participants who smoked marijuana experienced fewer symptoms.

Long story short, if more research is done, we may come to know about a lot of other benefits of this herb as well. For now, we can say that CBD has some benefits as far as the treatment of the abovementioned diseases is concerned. However, we don’t recommend that you smoke or use this herb in any form without a valid medical prescription. Hope this helps.
