You might have heard of the name corn silk and wondering what it is. The shiny hair inside the corn husk indicates the name silk and it is known as zea mays in Latin. Some of them will find it difficult to sip this type of tea and in that case you can take tincture of corn silk at least three times a day. This can be taken by having 3 to 6ml of tinctures daily.

Silicosis is a fibro-nodular lung disease caused by inhalation of dust containing crystalline silica, which is present in granite, slate and sandstone. Silicosis can be either acute or chronic. Common symptoms include cough, breathlessness, wheezing, digital clubbing, cyanosis, and other symptoms of cor pulmonale. This condition is an occupational hazard for people involved with mining, quarrying, sand blasting, cement and glass manufacturing, masonry, blast furnaces, coal mining and construction work.

The Ayurvedic treatment of silicosis is aimed at treating symptoms and preventing long term complications like chronic bronchitis, cor pulmonale, respiratory failure and lung cancer. Medicines like Shwas-Kuthar-Ras, Sitopaladi-Churna, Talisadi-Churna, Kantakari-Avaleha, Vasa-Avaleha, Ras-Sindur, Malla-Sindur, Sameer-Pannag-Ras and Shrung-Bhasma can be used to reduce inflammation in the lungs, and symptoms like cough, breathlessness and wheezing. Herbal medicines which can be used for this purpose include Pippali (Piper longum), Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), Bruhat-Kantakari (Solanum indicum), Som (Ephedra vulgaris), Karkatashrungi (Pistichia integerima), Kulingan (Alpimia galangal), Dhatura (Dhatura fastuosa), Vasa (Adhatoda vasaka), Kushtha (Saussurea lappa) and Pushkarmool (Inula racemosa).

Medicines like Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Suvarna-Bhasma, Abhrak-Bhasma, Maha-Laxmi-Vilas-Ras and Suvarna-Sameer-Pannag-Ras can be used to prevent permanent damage to the lungs and chronic complications like cor pulmonale and lung cancer. Medicines like Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum), Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba), Bala (Sida cordifolia) and Naagbala (Grewia hirsuta) can be used to boost the immune status of the body. Yashtimadhuk and Pippali, boiled in milk, are given in progressively increasing doses, followed by gradually tapering doses. Repeated such courses are very useful in preventing recurrent infections in the lungs, and help in repairing the damage done to the lungs.

The prognosis of silicosis depends upon the chronicity and severity of lung damage caused by this condition. Prevention is a very important aspect of the management of this condition. Occupational safety standards need to be implemented rigorously in order to prevent this condition and reduce morbidity and mortality.

Leptospirosis is an infectious disease that humans get when mucous membranes or lacerated skin come in contact with contaminated environmental sources. Rats are the most common reservoir for infection. Common symptoms include fever, chills, bodyache, intense headache, meningitis, enlargement of liver and spleen, uveitis, kidney failure, cough and hemoptysis.

The Ayurvedic treatment of leptospirosis is aimed at treating the symptoms and preventing complications like liver and kidney failure. Medicines like Tribhuvan-Kirti, Laxmi-Narayan-Ras, Sukshma-Triphala and Maha-Sudarshan-Churna are used to treat fever. Headache and bodyache can be treated using medicines like Triphala-Guggulu, Yograj-Guggulu, Maha-Rasnadi-Guggulu, Pathyadi-Qadha, Laghu-Sutshekhar-Ras and Godanti-Bhasma. Cough, sore throat and chest pain can be treated using medicines like Sitopaladi-Churna, Talisadi-Churna, Kantakari-Avaleha, Vasa-Avaleha, Yashtimadhuk (Glycerrhiza glabra), Pippali (Piper longum), Pushkarmool (Inula racemosa), Kushtha (Saussurea lappa) and Som (Ephedra vulgaris).

Hemoptysis and bleeding from other sites can be treated using medicines like Vasa (Adhatoda vasaka), Naagkeshar (Messua ferrea), Laxa (Purified wax) and Sphatik-Bhasma. Symptoms of meningitis and neurological involvement can be treated using medicines like Kaishor-Guggulu, Panch-Tikta-Ghrut-Guggulu, Tapyadi-Loh, Ekang-Veer-Ras, Maha-Vat-Vidhwans-Ras, Agnitundi-Vati and Bruhat-Vat-Chintamani-Ras. Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea can be treated using medicines like Laghu-Sutshekhar-Ras, Shankh-Vati, Praval-Panchamrut-Ras, Kutaj-Parpati, Panchamrut-Parpati and Bilva-Avaleha.

Enlargement of the liver and spleen, and jaundice are treated using medicines like Arogya-Vardhini, Bhunimbadi-Qadha, Punarnavadi-Qadha, Guduchyadi-Qadha, Kutki (Picrorrhiza kurroa), Tamra-Bhasma, Kalmegh (Andrographis paniculata), Bhrungraj (Eclipta alba), Bhumiamalaki (Phyllanthus niruri), Rohitak (Tecoma undulata) and Sharpunkha (Tephrosia purpurea). Involvement of the eyes can be treated using medicines like Saptamrut-Loh, Punarnavadi-Guggulu, Triphala-Ghrut, Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) and Tulsi (Ocimum sanctum). Impending kidney failure can be treated using medicines like Gokshuradi-Guggulu, Punarnavadi-Qadha, Chandraprabha-Vati, Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha, Saarivadi-Churna and Gomutra-Haritaki.

Most patients affected with leptospirosis eventually recover completely within a few weeks. Ayurvedic medicines can be given in this condition mainly to speed up the recovery process and to prevent serious complications like meningitis, severe jaundice, respiratory failure and kidney failure.
