In the emergency room, it was a valuable tool for rapid diagnosis of extremity thrombosis, varicoceles, inflammation, abscesses, gangrene and wound infections.”

With the expectant mother, the thermal image poses no risk to the baby, especially if the mother is complaining of other health conditions or suffers from low back problems. The University of Michigan, Department of Ob-Gyn in the mid 1990’s conducted a study with infrared thermal imaging for the evaluation of preterm rupture of the fetal membranes. It showed potential for being a sensitive clinical indicator for chorioamniotic infection. It’s an ideal test to provide the physician with additional information which can be used to better treat the mother.

Thermal imaging has applications in breast oncology, neurology, integrative medicine, plastic surgery, dentistry, orthopedics, acupuncture, occupational medicine, pain management, vascular medicine, cardiology and veterinary medicine. Novel uses now being developed include sleep studies and stress research.

One of the controversial applications has been for breast examinations. Of some note is the recognition that invasive breast cancer in its early stages exhibits little structural abnormality (thus escaping routine structural imaging recognition). Rather, it is detected often by a skilled technician using their hands to assess the side to side breast temperature differential. Unfortunately, a poorly conducted U.S. National Cancer Institute study in the late 1970’s with untrained physicians and cumbersome early thermal cameras tainted the prospects of the test being used extensively in this area. The emphasis was directed towards mammography.

Despite early advocates of the test, it was not until the late 1990’s, with improved efficiency and sensitivity of infrared imaging cameras, did the viability of thermal imaging for breast evaluations become recognized. Most recently, New York Presbyterian Hospital, Cornell, NY, found infrared thermal imaging to be “a valuable adjunct to mammography and ultrasound, especially in women with dense breast parenchyma.” While it is not a replacement for the mammogram, the non-radiating aspect is certainly attractive. The level of ease for conducting the test, with regular risk-free follow-up at low cost, is also appealing.

As thermal imaging is adjunctive, it is not considered solely diagnostic. In relation to X-rays, it can complement the structural information, leading to a more thorough examination. It also helps with other imaging methods by enabling a more precise set of views, rather than a generalized approach, thereby reducing exposure. At the Department of Neurosurgery in Yongdong Hospital, Seoul, Korea, “the areas of thermal change in cervical disc herniation can be helpful in diagnosing the level of disc protrusion and in detecting the symptomatic level in multiple cervical disc herniation patients.”

Some patients are not candidates for MRI, for example, and therefore, thermal imaging is a low cost initial step, especially when symptoms are non-specific or multi-faceted. Its use in brain surgery at the University of Southern California is revolutionary. They’ve determined the potential for thermal imaging to locate the margins of primary and metastatic brain tumors. Earlier work, published in 2002 by Mayo Clinic, demonstrated, intraoperatively, that infrared imaging “exhibited the distinct thermal footprints of 14 of 16 brain tumors.” It provided “real-time assessment of cerebral vessel patency and cerebral perfusion.”

If you’re fortunate enough to have employer-provided health insurance, that narrows your options down to the plans that your employer offers. If you don’t have coverage through your job, perhaps an organization or association that you belong to will allow you to buy health insurance through them at a group rate.

Another option is to check your local Obamacare health insurance marketplace to see if you qualify for an upfront premium credit, which would get you reduced premium costs. Even if you don’t qualify for the credit right away, buying your health insurance through the marketplace means you may qualify for it when you file your tax return for the year.

If you can’t, or won’t, get health insurance from any of these sources, you’ll have to fall back on buying a private plan. It will give you the widest range of options, but likely will be far more expensive.

Decide which type of policy to buy

Health insurance policies come in a variety of basic types, although you may not have access to all of these options through your preferred source. Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) are a very common type of health insurance policy. With an HMO, you’re required to use healthcare providers within the policy’s network, and you have to get a referral from your primary care physician in order to see a specialist.

Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs) are also quite common. A PPO health insurance policy has a network, but you’re not limited to in-network care — although using network providers is cheaper — and you don’t need referrals to see specialists.

Exclusive Provider Organizations (EPOs) are a hybrid between HMOs and PPOs. You’re required to stick to the plan’s network, but don’t need referrals for specialists. Finally, Point of Service (POS) plans are a less common option that are essentially the opposite of an EPO. You’re not limited to the POS plan’s network, but do need a referral to see a specialist.

Of the four common types of plans, an HMO or EPO tends to be cheaper than a PPO or POS with the same level of coverage. However, if network coverage is poor in your area, or you’re uncomfortable limiting yourself to network providers, it may be worth paying a little more to get a PPO or POS policy.

High deductible versus low deductible

All things being equal, the higher a plan’s deductible is, the lower the monthly premiums will be. A high deductible means that you’ll have to pay a lot of healthcare expenses yourself before the insurance policy kicks in, but if you have few or no medical expenses in a given year, these plans can be a bargain. Very low medical expenses means that you probably won’t surpass the deductible, even of a low-deductible plan, so getting a high-deductible plan keeps your insurance costs as low as possible while still protecting you in case something catastrophic happens.

If you decide to go the high-deductible route, getting a Health Savings Account (HSA)-enabled plan, and funding it with at least the equivalent of a year’s deductible, is your best option. An HSA plan neatly covers the biggest weakness of a high-deductible health insurance policy – namely, that you’d have to shell out a great deal of money on a major medical expense before the insurance would take over. If you have a full-year’s deductible tucked away in your HSA, you can just use that money to finance your share of the expenses, while simultaneously enjoying the triple tax advantage that an HSA offers.

After evaluating over 800,000 Instagram users, Markerly discovered that those with 1,000 or fewer followers had an 8% engagement rate, while users with over 10 million followers only had a 1.6% engagement rate. The research goes on to show that hiring influencers with 10,000 to 100,000 followers gets you the best results.

One of the biggest reasons for this is because micro-influencers tend to build a following based on what they share on their blog or social channels. If someone consistently posts about being a mom, odds are that other moms are going to follow along and relate to that influencer’s content. With each new post, more and more credibility is built, and eventually this influencer may become their audience’s go-to expert on the topic.

By the time that influencer publishes a sponsored post about a product they’re raving about, they’ve already built the trust of their audience, and those followers will want to try the product as well. This is a win-win situation because as more followers begin to talk about the product or buy it, the brand should experience a lift in their own follower counts, as well as their sales.

Aside from having better engagement rates and a more targeted audience, micro-influencers also cost significantly less than celebrities. Hopper HQ recently shared that a single Instagram post from Selena Gomez costs $550,000. In contrast, it costs $214 on average to hire a micro-influencer in the United States to post on Instagram. That means a brand could hire approximately 2,570 micro-influencers in exchange for one Selena Gomez post.

Bigelow Tea, in collaboration with Walmart, realized their money was better spent with micro-influencers, so they worked with Collective Bias on their Tea Moments campaign, and the results were stunning. By hiring influencers in the healthy living and wellness verticals, the product fit authentically into their blogs and social channels. The content was so well received by the influencers’ audiences that Bigelow Tea experienced an 18.5% sales lift and over 44 million impressions from the campaign.

2. Creative Freedom – What It Means and Why It’s Important

A common mistake brands make when first working with influencers is trying to have too much control over the process. If you chat with an influencer, odds are they’ll tell you creative freedom is one of the most important things they look for before agreeing to participate in a campaign. They understand what their unique voice is, and if they aren’t offered the ability to keep that voice, odds are they’ll decline working on the campaign. Just Do It!

Sound familiar? Nike had it right with this simple slogan yet I wonder how many take physical exercise and fitness seriously.

Recent article on Fitness Statistics by Sarah Marshall at MyFit.ca gave this sobering summary, ” More than 60% of adults don’t get the recommended amount of regular physical activity. Worse yet, 25% of all adults are not active at all! Nearly 50% of young people age 12-21 are not vigorously active on a regular basis. Only 19% of all high school students are physically active for 20 minutes or more in physical education classes every day during the school week. “. How do you measure up? No pun intended as my measurements have gone up consistently over the years as my exercise routines have diminished.

Keeping fit is vital to healthy living as my doctor reminds me at our regular semi-annual visits. Making time for fitness is another matter. We can all look at our daily calendars and say that there is just not enough time. But is time or the lack of it really the problem?

Of course not. When we get honest with ourselves the truth is we just don’t see it as a high enough priority. Many other more pressing activities crowd in and fill every waking moment. In fact if you are like me, an avid multitasker, you are handling at least two if not more demands at a time. You probably sing the same song with me, ‘ There’s just not enough time! ‘

But is that true? I have a number of friends who run miles everyday and they live very busy, productive and highly successful lives. So what is my problem?

I know that I need to get fit physically or at least make time every day for exercise. Not likely that at my stage in life I will need or be able to develop a body like Arnold S. but it would be great to have more energy to play with my grandchildren. So what should I do? What can you do to make sure you make time for fitness?

The first thing that I did recently was recognized that a holistic approach might be the best motivator. I realized that being physically fit without attention to my mental, emotional and spiritual well-being would not serve my long-term goals.

Mental Fitness

Anything that we want to carry out starts with our mental state. Training and education are critical components to mental fitness. Just like physical exercise we can train our mind through a variety of methods using our natural curiosity to keep our minds alert and active.

Emotional Fitness

Keeping our emotions in check is easier for some than others. I have always thought of myself as a very confident and emotionally stable person. In recent years I have faced some very challenging experiences that put my stability and confidence to the test. I realize now that if I had not been practicing sound emotional ‘exercises’ by taking the time to understand myself and get in touch with my emotions, the challenges I faced and still face could have thrown me off balance.

Spiritual Fitness

This area is too often ignored and yet has also gained a lot of press in recent years. Your spiritual domain is not just about what ‘religion’ you adhere to or what ‘belief system’ you follow. It has more to do with being in touch with the Creator of all life. Without attention to the basic Laws of Nature or Spiritual Laws of the universe life are void of meaning. A recent book by Reverend Graham Tomlin, ‘Spiritual Fitness’ talks about the balance needed between spiritual and physical fitness. One reader wrote, ” (in) ‘Spiritual Fitness’ (the author) conceptualized a powerful antidote to the consumption and luxury-driven culture advertised by modern media… “.

Physical Fitness

Finally, physical fitness, when balanced with all areas of our life becomes something that we cannot do without and still enjoy a full, vibrant and successful life. I am not advocating that you start running marathons tomorrow but a little walk everyday will do the heart and mind a lot of good.
