I bet you are wondering about the thread here, huh? Quite frankly, now that I have written it, I am feeling a bit stretched to connect the dots in this title, but here I go…

I have a theory about Life: We are all born as donuts. Our purpose in life is to find our donut hole. The space of the donut hole is symbolic of our own personal and unique life purpose…our Calling. When we find this purpose and live it, we feel whole and complete.

However, there are also the deceptive dynamics of addiction that also can fill the donut hole. There are the more obvious addictive behaviors such as alcohol and drugs, but also the more subtle (and often socially encouraged) addictions such as compulsive spending, relationships, work, sex, food and exercise.

At first, these addictive activities do not seem to be addictive at all. In fact, they often seem to be quite fulfilling and enjoyable. However, addiction always grows bigger and bigger, and begins to eat away at the “donut”…your life! If it goes on untreated, then in the end there nothing but a huge donut hole left…total loss and despair.

However, there is hope. The first step is to be aware, and then you can set-up an “anti-addiction self intervention” program. The three steps that are necessary for such a program are to uncover, recover, and discover:

Uncover – Addiction is like mold in that grows and festers in the dark. However, its power is diminished when it is brought into “the light”. Create a powerful support network for yourself that you can check-in with on a regular basis. Ask them to help you stay accountable with any addictive tendencies. Always uncover those dynamic that the addictive force wants to deny and minimize. In other words, commit to “tell on yourself” on a regular basis.

Recover – Reclaim what has been lost or displaced. Define, or re-define, your values, your purpose, your vision, and your goals. Get clear about the boundaries you need to keep away from addictive triggers. Know your addiction early-warning signs and indicators.

Discover – Design and live your life from the present to the future. Create an exciting life plan that stretches you into new, unknown territory. Discover the “Land of Possibility”; those totally new and different people, places, and activities. Create an extensive list of “top-line” indicators; those positive influences that are furthest away from addictive energy.

Today is one of those days I just wish I had more time to do everything that is on my “to do list. I tried to squeeze too many errands in between nap times for my twins babies and ended up with 2 screaming babies in my car. Oh boy. And now I am feeling frustrated at myself for causing baby tears and frustrated that my chores and errands are not finished! While you may not have twin babies, I am sure you have felt your life implode perhaps for other reasons.

So BALANCE…how do we get it? How do we accomplish our goals while maintaining some sort of inner peace?

A good friend once introduced me to the concept of checking in with my values when making goals, structuring my schedule, and just living everyday life. What are your top five values in life? Do your actions and activities in your life support these values or are your activities and actions incongruent with your values?

I would challenge all of us to exercise our right to have direction in our lives and establish those top values. If fitness, health and weight loss is important to you, then ultimately you must make time for it or you will feel uneasy, frustrated and perhaps even depressed about it. If you also value feeling rested and refreshed, then perhaps 8 hours of sleep is a priority for you as well. So how do you make time for both??

It takes 21 days to establish a new habit. My challenge for the month of May is to change a current actions in your life to uphold and support your top 2 goals and values. Give it 21 days…a very consistent 21 days consecutively. Maybe the alarm is set one hour earlier to start the day with exercise, then at the end of the day, you need not worry about it, it is done and you can hit the hay knowing you have already exercised AND getting to bed early enough for that all important sleep.

How does TIMING play into all of this? Some goals and priorities are present at specific times in our lives. For me at this time in my life, mothering is a top value. I desire to be the kind of Mother who is available and present in heart, mind and body. I want to be the one who cooks them breakfast, lunch and dinner…reads to them…takes them to their activities…puts them to bed each night. Does it make sense then for me to fill my schedule with so many other commitments that I am not able to be available to my babies and 5 year old? No. However, perhaps after my children all enter school, I will have the spare time to dive into other life goals I would like to pursue.

4) Have a lot of water and sleep well. Try finishing 6-7 bottles every day as it keeps the body hydrated specially during the scorching heat of the summer season.

Do you have Radon in your home? That is the question that all homeowners in should know the answer to. The upper Midwest has some of the highest concentrations of radon in the country and that’s why home owners or home buyers for that matter should be aware. Most people don’t think they have radon because they can’t smell it, taste it, see it or touch it. It is silent and it is deadly.

So what is Radon? Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can penetrate your home and cause serious health risks to the whole family. Most soils contain uranium that, over time, decays to produce radium and polonium. Eventually, polonium is released with the radon, which creates a high toxicity level in the air and water that it infuses.

There is no model for how radon enters the house it is very persistent and most commonly enters the home through cracks in the slab, floor-wall joints exposed soil and sometimes even water from a well.

Exposure to radon gas increases your risk of developing lung cancer. According to the EPA an estimated 21,000 lung cancer deaths each year in the United States are due to radon exposure, which makes it the second leading cause of lung cancer following smoking. Radon gas and its decay products in the air are breathed into the lungs where they break down further and emit alpha particles. Alpha particles release a small burst of energy, which is absorbed by nearby lung tissue. This results in lung cell damage.
