Navy Vocabulary is an interesting mix of words, letters, numbers, and stuff that can’t be printed. Recruits at Boot Camp in Great Lakes become familiar with all the new terms very quickly. Here is a top ten list of Navy vocabulary words that will be learned in Boot Camp:

  1. Petty Officer – An enlisted individual in the US Navy who has the necessary time in rate and has been promoted – after passing necessary training and exams. A Petty Officer starts out as a Third Class E4, and competes for advancement through Master Chief Petty Officer, an E9. The Petty Officers at Great Lakes are quite intimidating.
  2. RDC – Recruit Division Commander. If the Petty Officers are intimidating, RDC’s are terrifying. Recruits are divided into Divisions during Boot Camp, and the RDC is in charge of one division. Their job is to make raw Recruits into a cohesive group of Sailors. By most accounts, RDC’s yell a lot.
  3. Rack – Bed. Recruits spend more time learning to make their racks than they do sleeping in them.
  4. Head – Bathroom. If your Recruit informs you that he or she is in charge of the head, understand that they pulled bathroom cleaning duty.
  5. PT – Physical Training. Recruits do a LOT of Physical training during basic training, starting early in the morning and continuing until all hours. Sometimes, if a Division or a Recruit doesn’t perform to the RDC’s expectations, they get IT.
  6. IT – Intensive Training – Getting IT’d is a consequence for all sorts of infractions. One Recruit can cause the entire Division to get IT.
  7. PFA – Physical Fitness Assessment. There are two assessments that a Recruit must pass in order to graduate. Running, situps and swimming are involved. The second PFA takes place during the 6th week of training. One of the reasons for all the PT and IT is so Recruits can pass the final PFA.
  8. Ricky Crud – Recruit Sickness. A large number of Recruits catch this in Great Lakes. It involves the upper respiratory system, headaches, stomach cramps, diarrhea, and nosebleeds. (Read our Boot Camp guide to find out how to avoid getting the Ricky Crud.)
  9. Chit – A permission slip. In the Navy, Sailors must get permission to do many things – like get a tattoo or go on vacation. Recruits might need a chit to go to medical.
  10. PIR – Pass In Review. Boot Camp Graduation is commonly called Pass in Review. Family and friends are invited to Freedom hall in Great Lakes, Illinois, where they get to see their Recruit’s division perform. It’s a once in a lifetime, impressive ceremony that should not be missed.

Bonus. Two words NOT to use: Ma’am and Sir. In the Navy, enlisted personnel do NOT like to be referred to as Ma’am or Sir. If you ask them why, they will inform you that they work for a living.

Virtually every Personal Trainer will have a series of letters after their name indicating some, if not all, of the fitness certifications they hold. Often it will be CPT, meaning Certified Personal Trainer. The organization that bestows the title is more important than the letters CPT. This article will give you an idea what to look for AND what to look out for in a Personal Trainer’s certification. Armed with this information, you will have a much better opportunity to hire the right Personal Trainer for YOUR needs.

Currently there are currently only seven organizations in the exercise industry that meet the stringent requirements of the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA). The American College of Sports Medicine, the American Council on Exercise, The Cooper Institute, the National Academy of Sports Medicine, the National Council on Strength and Exercise, the National Federation of Professional Trainers, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association.

Holding a certification from one of these organizations does not mean you’ve found a Great Personal Trainer. It means that individual meets one of the criteria for being a Great Personal Trainer (see my article on The Five Traits of a Great Personal Trainer) and may possibly be the person to help you get in the best shape of your life. Getting in the best shape of your life does not include limitations for age or your current physical condition. Unless you are afflicted with an ailment that precludes exercise, a Great Personal Trainer can help you get in the best shape of your entire life, as safely, painlessly, and expediently as possible, regardless of age or current physical conditioning. That is the Personal Trainer we are seeking!

A certification from one of the above organizations means the Personal Trainer has met a strict and thorough process to become a Certified Personal Trainer. They have an understanding of anatomy and physiology, which exercises work various muscle groups, a basic understanding of designing an exercise program for a variety of clients with differing physical abilities, and the knowledge to implement those programs. Importantly, the organizations also require CPR certification and continuing education to maintain certification. CPR certification is important for obvious reasons…and not just in an exercise setting. If you are not CPR certified, consider doing it. You will learn how to potentially save a life with a few hours training.

The continuing education requirement for Personal Trainer certification is vital because exercise science is a dynamic discipline. Ongoing research studies by non-biased entities, such as universities and hospitals, provide constant information updates on our understanding of how exercise affects the human body. This promotes more effective program design and more efficient results for the client. In other words, by staying informed about updates in exercise science your Personal Trainer can continue to help you achieve peak performance, improving your fitness level as proficiently as possible!

There are too many “Certified Personal Trainer” programs to list that do not meet the standards of the National Commission for Certifying Agencies. The reasons they don’t meet the standards are also too numerous to list but let me give you a few: For $99 you can take an online test for certification and become a CPT instantly. If you fail the first time you are allowed to continue re-taking the test until you pass. Multiple organizations design their own educational material, administer their own tests, and grade those test, with no outside oversight. Think about that for a minute.

Would you want your doctor to be educated, tested, and licensed without some type of objective outside oversight? I think not. Other programs are put together by bodybuilders or powerlifters and cater to that audience. The problem is that they are only “qualified” to work with that small segment of the population but their business card says “Certified Personal Trainer.” When their rent is due, they may decide you meet the requirements to become one of their clients. This is a short list of the potential problems encountered when dealing with a Personal Trainer certified by anyone other than the seven organizations certified by the NCCA. My advice is to avoid them.

The Pill

The phrase "The Pill" is used to refer to any type of birth control pill. There are over one dozen types of pills that are prescribed by doctors today. Some common brands are OrthoEvra Low, Yazmin, Seasonique, and Lutera. This prescription is filled monthly. You take a pill every day that increases specific hormones in your body to decrease the chance of pregnancy. It is important to take these at the same time every day for them to be most effective. There is one row of pills that are considered placebo pills, these do not contain hormones and trigger your body to menstruate. The pill's largest benefit is that it decreases acne in patients.

The Ring

NuvaRing is rapidly becoming one of the favorite choices in birth control. This is a flexible, vaginal ring that is inserted once a month. You do not need to visit a doctor for this. Insert the ring and leave it in for three weeks. At the end of the third week, remove the ring for one week and replace it with a new one. As of 2010 more than half of all health insurances are not covering NuvaRing, however that is likely to change in the future as it becomes more popular. The only way to know if your insurance covers it or not is by contacting them or looking over their prescription drug list.

Implanon & Mirena

Two long term choices in birth control are Implanon and Mirena. Implanon is a small (approximately 2 inches long), flexible rod that is injected into your arm. It slowly releases hormones over the course of three years. Mirena is a modern day IUD. These work by irritating the inside of the uterus to prevent it from releasing eggs. Each month you need to check the threads on Mirena, this is explained to you by your gynecologists. Mirena can last up to five years. Spotting may occur during the use of either of these methods. Some women experience a complete stop in bleeding all together. Both of these can also cause weight gain and acne.

The Shot & The Patch

The least relied upon forms of birth control are the Depovera Shot and the birth control patch. Patients receive the shot once every three months. It releases a level of hormones that trick the body into believing it is in menopause. Patients often experience spotting throughout the year. The shot is also associate with drastic weight gain in patients. The patch is a clear hormonal patch that can be placed on the arm, back of shoulder, lower back or abdomen. It releases a steady flow of hormones for one month and then is replaced with a new patch.

Being a Health and Fitness Professional, it is my job to understand terms and definitions which are commonplace to this industry, as well to keep abreast of evolving trends. Through my experience, I have found that a number of terms deserve a little more clarification than that which they are granted.

Aside from clarifying the definition of Health Related Fitness, this article intends to shed some light on a few of the associated terms, and to show their respective distinctions.

Is it simply all in a name?

The fitness world seems to use the concept Health Related Fitness like a generic fitness principle – interchangeable with others like “Physical Fitness”, “Health and Fitness” or simply “Fitness.”

While all of these terms can be included under the broad term Health and Physical Fitness, they individually refer to different aspects – both generic and specific. Unfortunately, references to these and other fitness-related terms are often vague, while consistency in their intended use is meager at best; there is a kind of “generally accepted” use for them, but individuals often rely on own interpretation, and this can lead to confusion.

With that said, does Health Related Fitness simply infer fitness by means of good health? Not quite. That is why we need to understand a little more behind these words before digesting the definition.

How did the term Health Related Physical Fitness come about?

That is a good question. One could probably ask what is this concept all about – can we not simply use the terms “Fitness” or “Physical Fitness” instead?” Why Health “Related”?

The main reason stems from the fact that most health and fitness terms are used inconsistently and often refer to different concepts or notions. Subsequent to the 1996 report from the US Surgeon General (Physical Activity and Health; a report of the Surgeon General), there was a move to try and address the alarming rise in obesity levels among the general American public. Studies and initiatives required standardization among clinicians, health practitioners and fitness trainers to grapple with the task at hand. Enter “Health Related Physical Fitness”, a working term to address the general state of health among the public.

The definition of Health Related Fitness

According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the main authority in this field, ineffective definitions with unclear and subjective wordings, as well as definitions containing terms which themselves require defining, have contributed to confusing the term “Physical Fitness.”

There exists no reliable guide for Health and Fitness Professionals to measure “Physical Fitness”, because the term has been so loosely and inconsistently defined. It is therefore that one should consider the concept of Health Related Fitness. The definition therefore centers on the 5 Components of Physical Fitness which relate to “good health.” These Components are:

  • Cardiorespiratory Fitness
  • Body Composition
  • Flexibility
  • Muscular Strength
  • Muscular Endurance

On the other hand, Skill Related Fitness Components are:

  • Balance
  • Reaction Time
  • Coordination
  • Agility
  • Speed
  • Power

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the definition of Physical Fitness emphasizes the difference between Health Related Physical Fitness and Athletic Ability Physical Fitness. Its point-of-departure is the “health” of the US nation, which is often referred to as the “public health perspective.” In that respect, the 5 Health Related Fitness Components are more important than those related to Athletic Ability (or Skill Related Components).

Although the concept of Health Related Fitness has an integral association with “good health”, the 5 Components are addressed individually by health professionals to allow for their measurement.

Now that we have a deeper understanding of the term, what purpose does it serve?

Continuing from where the definition left off, the objective of measuring the 5 Components is to advise clients about their own particular Health Related Fitness, and to use data obtained from the tests to design appropriate exercise programs which can then be evaluated.

The 5 Components contribute evenly to make up a holistic Health Related Fitness, which is of direct interest to the health of the ordinary citizen, in that the concept is normative. In other words, it is a standard which allows for consistent application.
