Why CrossFit May Be The Best Exercise Program For 2019

As the New Year approaches I thought it was time to decide if I tweak my workout program or stick with what has been working in 2018. I know the newest and best exercise programs seem to surface about this time of year and I want to dig deeper into why I think CrossFit is not only the beat workout, but why it might even be the only workout you need.

Let’s start with the science behind a good workout program.

As you are probably aware, muscle cells, or any cells for that matter, require oxygen to live and thrive. As oxygen enters the cell, toxins or waste exit the cell. The releasing of the waste is enabled by muscle contraction. Without he contractions, cell transport is hindered and you can even get a buildup of toxins around the cell wall. If this occurs, a person will lose flexibility and general health. Therefor, let’s agree exercise is a powerful way to enhance your body down to even the cellular level.

There are two types of exercise, aerobic and anaerobic, Aerobic involves constant intake of oxygen during the exercise. Anaerobic will only have little to short bursts of oxygen during exercise. Examples of aerobic exercise include, long distance running, swimming, biking, or even walking. These type of exercises require oxygen for fuel to maintain the activity. Anaerobic exercises are short bursts of activity and usually involve a high level of muscular contraction without steady intake of oxygen. Anaerobic exercises would be like weightlifting or sprinting.

What components should a workout regimen include?

A good regular exercise program should include aerobic, anaerobic, flexibility training, and strength training. You might be saying, “Don’t you have strength training covered by just lifting or running? Also, isn’t flexibility training just my normal stretching?” Yes, but your strength training should include explosive, holding, and endurance strength. Flexibility training includes movement of the body in all planes, not just the muscles you are working out. Yoga would be a good example of flexibility training.

A good exercise program often includes like minded people to push and hold you accountable.

Research has shown many people quite their exercise program after a short amount of time because they feel alone or unmotivated. A good, consistent workout schedule should include a mentor or partner. This person will push you beyond your limits and hold you accountable to showing up and striving toward your goals. Believe it or not, your mind will stop looking for excuses to lift less or skip workouts when you know you are expected to be there and perform to your ability. Going to exercise classes often helps you actually schedule your workout vs trying to fit it in after other commitments are met.

What about diet and supplements tailored to a workout?

Another important aspect of an exercise program. Fuel for your body and nutrients to assist muscle recovery are necessary. With a proper diet and nutritional supplements, fatigue and plateauing is minimized. Frequency of injury is also minimized.

Okay, what exercise program(s) are best for 2019?

Just like 2018, the best workout for 2019 is CrossFit. Why just that? Why not use a mixture of programs? Simple answer is CrossFit includes everything we just talked about. A good CrossFit workout uses aerobic and anaerobic exercise. It has all the methods of strength training and includes flexibility programs. You are exercising with like-minded individuals that will push you to be your best. The diet and nutritional components associated with CrossFit are second to none. For example, Paleo diets have become a CrossFit staple.

In closing, I’m not telling you that CrossFit is the only workout program you should do. But, CrossFit include all the ingredients for a healthy, safe, and long-term exercise lifestyle.

Be your best,

The CrossFit Team

Here is a workout from 1959 Mr. Universe champion, Bruce Randall.

Randall liked to work mostly upper body with squats or deadlift being his only lower body exercise. He would change his routines frequently and went through different stages as a powerlifter, Olympic lifter and bodybuilder.

As a matter of fact, Randall went from 415 pounds (as a powerlifter and Olympic lifter) all the way down to 223 pounds as a bodybuilder!

Bruce finished second in the 1958 Mr. Universe and was bound and determined to come back stronger the next year. Of course he did and the rest is history.

Some of Randall’s best lifts were 770 pounds in the deadlift, 680 in the squat, 375 in the overhead press and 482 in the bench press.

Below is a typical workout that Randall followed on his way to the 1959 Mr. Universe crown.

Mr. Universe Workout

Overhead Press 3 x 4-6

Bench Press 3 x 4-6

Incline Bench Press 3 x 4-6

Curls 3 x 4-6

Chins 3 x 4-6

Leg Raises 1 x 20-50

Squats or Deadlifts 3 x 6-8

Notes: Randall trained 3-4 days per week and would alternate squats and deadlifts. He eat three meals a day with one or two homemade protein drinks. As always, train hard and with maximum effort. If 3-4 days is too much, lower it to 2 days. Train hard and heavy.

Understand that to be successful in any weight training program – hard work is a must! Half-hearted effort does nothing for you. If you’re new to weight training or grossly out of shape, consult a physician first. End of disclaimer.

A swim spa is ideal for swimming but did you know that it is an ultimate training machine? Here are the top 4 ways to train and condition in a swim spa.

1. RESISTANCE TRAINING

The best upper and lower body workouts include resistance training. But there are only so many hours in a day and only so much time to spend in the gym. A home swim spa can make all the difference if you want to achieve a well-rounded training program. Just hop in the water any time of the day to accomplish your weight training goals with water power.

Swim spas with a powerful current can give you the same results as working out with weights – a lower current equals less weight or crank up the speed for intense resistance. The benefit of training in water is that it supports muscles during exercise and diminishes joint stress. That means using water instead of weights will keep you at peak performance levels without risking injury or putting excess pressure on your joints. A win-win all around. Plus, if you’re healing from an injury, you can still workout in water (with your doctor’s approval) and stay conditioned while you heal. That’s what elite athletes do to stay game-ready as they recover.

2. CORE EXERCISES

Everyone wants a toned mid-section but tight abs take work. Hard core ab exercises can be achieved by working out against a swim spa current. Look for a swim spa where the current spans the full width of the pool. Then hold onto the side, ramp up the water power and do crunches or pikes against the current. Another option is to use a medicine ball or kickboard for added resistance against the power of the water. With these exercises, you will target your core and round out your exercise and strength training regimen.

3. RUNNING

The advantage of running in the water is that you fire up the same muscles you would use on land, but the weightless quality of water eliminates gravity-induced pounding on joints. The intensity of running in the water increases exponentially the faster you go. In other words, the harder you work, the greater the resistance, and the better the results! You will achieve the same cardio workout as you would on land with better outcomes. Looking for the different ways to run in the water.

4. SWIMMING

Every week there seems to be another fitness craze. But one exercise that never goes out of style is swimming. Whether you are a recreational swimmer, elite athlete, or triathlon competitor, you can swim your way to peak performance levels. There are so many great benefits you get from swimming. It is a low impact exercise yet it builds endurance, muscle strength, cardiovascular fitness, and can help reduce stress. Some studies have shown that it can help lower blood pressure, bad cholesterol, and control blood sugar levels. Swimming in a swim spa adds extra benefits. You can program a customized swimming experience to suit individual preferences, monitor your progress, and swim whenever you like in the comfort of your own home.

Water workouts add a powerful dimension to any exercise plan. With these four simple training techniques, you’ll crush your fitness goals.

Now think about how much easier it would be if you owned your own swim spa. A home fitness pool can be installed outside, inside, in a basement, on a deck, or many other locations to create the perfect home gym. Once it’s up and running, you can exercise for as long as you’d like whenever you want.

In the memory of the Marine Corps and to celebrate it's 235th birthday I have constructed these three workouts to be attempted at your own risk. The Intermediate workout is probably the most fun, while the advanced is simple with it's own challenges.

Take the time to check out these workouts and change up your routine a bit and give these a shot.

By the way for a perfect Physical Fitness Test score in the Marine Corps you have to be able to run 3 miles in under 18 minutes; perform 20 pull ups from a dead hang (no kip & no swing – we talking strict); and 100 sit ups in under 1 minute. Each event counts as 100 points, for a total of 300. All preformed in succession to each other on the same day. One day maybe you will go out and test yourself against the President's own United States Marine Corps.

In the meantime, good luck and have fun trying out the workouts.

Beginner's Workout

Equipment: (Optional: Pull up Bar | Jungle Gym | TRX System)

Then immediately complete a set of ten push ups, however you need to do them.

Repeat this 3 times for 10 sets on each set.

Curl-up

You will lie on your back and attempt to do as many curl ups as possible. To perform a curl up, you are to lie on your back with your feet near your butt and look as though you are in the normal sit up position. From here you will squeeze your bellybutton in as hard (Think as in you can try to touch your spine with your bellybutton.) Then with your chin tucked in you will curlup until your shoulder blades are off the floor.

You will perform as many sets as you can until you reach 100 Reps. Try to reduce the number of sets each day.
