I recently interviewed two, very fit, former paratroopers, who still train and work hard and enjoy dating younger women and fatherhood. Find out how three 60 year old, former paratroopers, stay strong, overcome injuries, date and even have children. Listen to the attached audio clip and/or read the summary:

AS = Andy Slusarenko

DB= Doug Burgis

DS= Interviewer

GROWING UP

AS- Ate peanut butter sandwiches, hiked, swam and played soccer in the rural areas on Vancouver Island. Age 12, jumped and beaten by six guys. AS trained in judo and other martial arts. Was only “white guy” in judo classes.

DB- Born in small town. Loved freedom of outdoors. Moved to Vancouver and experienced culture shock, such as never seeing a black or gay man before. Lied about his age to join army cadets and enjoyed camping and individual sports.

DS-Born on Airforce base. Enjoyed outdoors and individual sports.

MILITARY

AS- Joined army. Was fittest guy in battalion. Joined CAR.

DB- Joined army, infantry and CAR (Canadian Airborne Regiment). At CAR, you were judged by your physical abilities. You never wanted to fall behind.

DS- After too many beatings, joined army reserves, then regular army and trained in martial arts.

TURNING 60

AS- Gift to self was workout challenge at local gym.

DB- Gave self “Birthday Workout.” Bench press was better than my 20’s. Reverse pullups: 6 sets of 8.

DS- Run up Grouse Mountain, take girlfriend out dancing.

INJURIES

AS- Pain is different as a kid. Had to work around a shoulder injury since I was 13 years old. Still went onto become a paratrooper and aikido black belt.

DB- Always work around the injury. Older means better patience with injuries. Have the wisdom to know I can “work around” the injury and get back in shape. Always keep training. If I cannot run, I skip, etc.

DS- If I injure my knee, I work on flexibility and upper body. The same with other body parts. Always keep moving.

ADVICE TO OTHERS

AS- It is what YOU want out of training. It is NOT what other people think. Take on challenges. You need a reason to get up in the morning. If you get hurt, just suck it up and get it done. During my Airborne reunion, so many guys were unfit and overweight. Take fitness challenges.

DB- You need to do something that boosts adrenaline and testosterone. Life will give you what you need. Look for challenges. Leave some mystery in it. I am going motorcycling in the Baja, Mexico and don’t have my logistics together yet. I’d like to see more guys fitter. Usually, when I train, there are only about four of us over 50 during kettle bell seminars. It should not be that way. There should be more over 50 year olds exercising. During my PPCLI infantry reunion many ex-soldiers looked bad. They should still be fit enough to play soccer.

DS- You have to have some kind of excitement, some kind of risk to give you that boost.

RETIREMENT PLANS

AS- Get a boat and see friends all over the world. Wind is not taxed and water is free.

DB- Finish home renovations. I will do my adventure while retired, while my younger partner keeps working

It seems as if the health of America is failing. One million Americans will die of circulatory disease this year. Six hundred thousand lives will be cut short by cancer as well. How did we get in such a mess? I'm not sure. But there is a way out that is starting to generate a real buzz! Since CNN and the gang won't talk about it I decided to write is article.

Dear readers, I want to introduce you to the most nutrient dense food on the earth; wolfberries, or more specifically Lycium Barbarum.

The western scientific community have verified what Chinese and Tibetan health practitioners have known for thousands of years. Wolfberries are the healthiest known food on our planet.

In this report I will be talking specifically about wolfberries. In my research on the subject I found that not all wolfberries are created equal. The three most potent berries in the wolfberry family are Tibetan Goji berries, Chinese Xinjiang wolfberries and Chinese Ningxia wolfberries which all belong to the Lycium genus.

Wolfberries, a national treasure in China, have been used in traditional Chinese folk medicine for over 5,000 years. Ancient Chinese medical texts celebrated wolfberries for their wide range of health benefits including strengthening the 'chi "or life force of the body. The people who consumed this fruit apparently lived free of common diseases like arthritis, cancer and diabetes. has reached over 100 years!

In 1988, the Beijing Nutrition Research Institute conducted detailed chemical analysis and nutritional composition studies of the dried wolfberry fruit. Hold on to your socks, this is what they discovered. In addition to being packed with vitamins B1 and B6 (which is needed by the body to convert food into energy), and vitamin E (which has never been found in fruit before), wolfberries contain more protein then whole wheat, 18 amino acids ( 8 of them essential for life), 21 trace minerals (including significant amounts of zinc, iron, copper, calcium, selenium, phosphorus and germanium; a very rare anti-cancer agent almost never found in food), more beta carotene than carrots, 500 times more vitamin C by weight than oranges, essential fatty acids (required for the production of hormones and smooth functioning of the brain and nervous system) and is the richest source of carotenoids (natural fat-soluble pigments that play a critical role in vitamin A activity in humans) of any food on the planet. That's not all.

Here is a short list of other health promoting compounds found in Lycium Barbarum:

Beta Sitosterol: An anti-inflammatory agent found to lower cholesterol, and used to treat sexual impotence and prostrate enlargement.

Zeaxanthin and Lutine: Valued for their role in protecting the eyes.

Betaine: Used by the liver to produce Choline which assists detoxification reactions in the liver. Betaine is known to protect DNA, enhance memory, promote muscle growth and protects us from fatty liver disease.

Cyperone: A sesquiterpene used in treatment of cervical cancer. It is also known to benefit heart and blood pressure problems as well as menstruation problems.

Solavetivone: A powerful anti-fungal and anti-bacterial agent.

Physalin: A natural compound that boosts the immune system. Found to be effective in treating leukaemia, hepatitis B and cancer.

A laboratory procedure was recently developed to measure the amount of antioxidants the foods we eat contain. The procedure known as ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) was developed by Dr. Guohua Cao at USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, USA. ORAC is one of the most sensitive and reliable methods for measuring the ability of antioxidants to absorb free radicals. It is the only test to combine both time and degree of inhibition of free radicals.

According to Tufts University, the average person needs approximately 3,000 to 5,000 ORAC units per day to have a significant impact on plasma and tissue antioxidant capacity. Three servings of fruits and vegetables per day provide approximately 1200 ORAC units. This means the average person is short by up to 3800 ORAC units each day, depending on the fruits and vegetables they are choosing and their body's requirements. To make up the difference, experts recommend supplementing our diet with high ORAC foods to become and stay healthy and slow …

The Orlando schools will be promoting health and wellness to its students this year. As part of the Orange County FL District, the schools in Orlando will implement a new wellness policy that was just approved this month.

The new policy is in response to a federal mandate, under the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004. All schools that receive federal funding for lunch programs must have a wellness policy in place.

The wellness program for the schools in Orlando is designed to promote better health to their students. Healthy eating and physical activity will play a big part in the Orlando policy. The hope is to completely change the environments to healthier ones.

With the new wellness program effective on the first day, each of the schools is challenged to be creative and innovative in implementing wellness activities and promotions.

Each of the schools in Orlando will create a Healthy School Team (HST). The organization of each team is based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Coordinated School Health Model. There will be a member on each HST to represent each of the following areas of health:

o Health education,

o Counseling.

o Psychological and social services,

o School health services,

o Nutrition services,

o Physical education,

o The healthy school environment,

o Health promotion for Orlando schools’ staff, and

o Family and community.

Under the belief that healthy children is a community-wide concern, each of the Orlando schools will enlist the involvement of parents, families, teachers, counselors, school administrators, healthcare professionals, businesses, and community groups and organizations.

The Orange County schools already have experimented with the wellness program, which will benefit the Orlando schools. For almost three years, the program has been used in 13 schools within the county. The HSTs have been found to be quite effective in promoting health and wellness, not only for the students but their families and school staff, as well. The Orlando schools will use much of the information and experiences from these schools, when implementing their own wellness program this year.

The experimental HSTs have sponsored walking and running clubs for students, school staff, and parents. Another example of creative thinking by the HSTs is “wellness Wednesdays”, whereby students are rewarded for being involved in healthy activities, such as eating nutritious lunches, drinking water versus soda, or participating in a physical activity. Each HST at the Orlando schools will be charged with developing activities that meet the specific needs of each school and its students. The HST members are limited only by their own imaginations to develop creative promotions, events and activities.

The new wellness program at the Orlando schools is all about health and wellness for children, and helping everyone concerned to understand the importance of good health and its effect upon a child’s ability to learn. From the federal mandate to the Orlando schools’ implementation of the wellness program, the sole purpose is to improve the health of students in order for them to be better able to learn and achieve — now and in the future.
