5. Brush up Basics of Philosophy: Yoga is an ancient philosophical science propounded by Sage Patanjali. Ring the Bell, Yoga is in Session

The rise of attention deficit disorder (ADD), decreasing emphasis on physical fitness, and the increasing stress levels of our children, worry us all. With this in mind, some educational programs and public schools are giving Yoga a chance, by allowing their students to practice from an early age.

Parents who enjoy Yoga are happy to share it with their children. Even the federal government supports efforts: federal Physical Education Program (PEP) grant worth about $750,000 has helped train some 200 teachers nationwide in “Yoga Education.”

According to an article in Education News, in October 2010, Yoga classes for students range from year-long regular exposure, as part of a standard Physical Education class to elective classes, typically less intense and sometimes offered during the school day, or before or after, school. Providing the Yoga instruction costs, on average, $70 per class, but the cost to the school varies depending on students’ ability to pay.

Nonprofit organizations, that recognize the value of Yoga practice, have jumped on the bandwagon to support it. Charitable group, Bent on Learning, raised $325,000 for children’s Yoga in schools in June 2011, through an elite fundraiser, with guests like Gwyneth Paltrow. Other organizations raise funds on a smaller scale or “match make” opportunities between local Yoga instructor volunteers and needy schools.

Best of all, there is definitive proof that Yoga in schools leads to positive outcomes for students. The Program Evaluation and Research Collaborative (PERC) is an independent entity, overseen by California State University, and provides program evaluation and research services to local, state, federal agencies, and schools.

In 2003, they evaluated the “Yoga Ed” program in The Accelerated School (a California charter school). The study subjects were 405 students from kindergarten to 8th grade, and 18 core subject teachers. The Accelerated School is located in South Central Los Angeles, with a student body composed of 62% Hispanic and 36% African-American students.

Highlights of the results of this study are mentioned below.

“Yoga class participation appears to help students’ improve their attitudes toward themselves.

Yoga class participation helped improve students’ behavior.

Yoga class participation helped improve students’ physical health.

Yoga class participation helped students perform better in school academically.”


The introduction of Yoga programs has not been without controversy. Some critics of Yoga see its historic base, in Hindu spirituality, as a conflict with the ban on religious activity in public schools. To avoid this, the Yoga programs have developed alternative terms for components that have traditional names or supposed spiritual aspects. Hence, breathing techniques are now called “balloon breath,” “bunny breathing” and “dragon breath,” for example.

Therefore, if you are a Yoga teacher, who has been invited to teach Yoga in a public school, be aware that extremist objections can possibly surface. In such a case, it may be impossible to reason with the unreasonable. One option for public schools is “Yoga Fitness” or “Stretch and Breathe Classes.” At the very least, our children will learn to be fit, focus on their studies, and deal with daily stress.

Four months ago I began babysitting my granddaughter three days a week while her parents headed to work. Both physical therapists, my daughter and son-in-law have great jobs, ones for which they are well trained and that they enjoy. Fortunately, as a retiree though also a volunteer to vast entities, I knew I could scramble up the free time to accept this wonderful prospect: bonding with my little sweetheart.

I am willing to sacrifice many items when it comes to helping others, but exercise is not one of them. Yes, I would probably give it up a little if I could not otherwise care for my granddaughter, but… Having started running in college, 45 years later it is a vital part of life, along with swimming, walking, and gardening. Oh, yes, there is all of the other “stuff” I do as well like playing the piano and writing, but a day without exercise is stifling, non-productive, and exhausting. So right before I began my babysitting stint I checked out the local running trails and paths and was pleased to find a terrific variety just steps from the kids’ front door. However, knowing that during the winter roads might be slick and that darkness might force cancellation, I headed toward a local fitness club to check out the facilities.

Friendly staff immediately led me on an extensive tour of the fitness equipment, swimming pools, and other predominant features of the gym and then they handed me a list of classes also available. I scanned the list when my eyes lit on “Yoga”. Two of my sisters swear by their yoga sessions, always encouraging me to give it a whirl. But time and other obligations have prevented me taking them up on this idea. Until now, that is. Opportunity and timing are in synch and so mornings include rigorous activity and also a smattering of yoga.

My first day in yoga class I was completely lost. I didn’t know a thing about mats and blocks let alone any of the movements or their names. Luckily, a gentleman led me to the equipment area and made recommendations. I then proceeded with my bundle to a dark, unobtrusive corner of the room, hoping to become invisible as I learned the ropes of my new endeavor. Knowing that I had to leave class a little early so that I could be home to assume Grandma duties, I did not want to interrupt, if possible, during my exit. Soon our instructor strode into the room, greeting familiar faces and smiling at the newbie. Following the rest of the class, I folded myself into sitting position and then mimicked the group as we moved through a number of positions. I found it very interesting and I was also shocked to realize how stiff and rigid some parts of my body had become. But I survived, and returned the next morning.

Yoga is slow, sustained movement with lots of stretching and repositioning back and arms and legs and necks and every other vital body part. The biggest problem I encountered was the slow part. After all, I am a runner and a swimmer. Can you fathom what it is like to move in a sloth-like format for 60 minutes? You who are of the pent-up energy type will understand my frustration and edginess. But I was committed to improving posture and flexibility and so I returned week after week, glimpsing progress with each session. I was moving better. However, I would not say that I was happy or content. Just dedicated.

And then the day finally arrived. It was a week when I had been able to attend four sessions and by the third day I was getting into the groove. Our class of 30-35 was only about 15 that day so our instructor had us get belts to hook onto the wall, then wrap the belt around our waists. Next we slung one leg over the belt and twisted forward, securely held and thus prevented from unwanted face-plants, we began to glide. We swept up with hands waving above our heads then swooshed downward with fingers touching our toes. Up and down and up and down …

In a single round, the Surya Namaskar burns around 13.90 calories. Slowly and gradually, you may increase the rounds of Surya Namaskar to 108.

If performed at a slow pace, the Surya Namaskar tones the muscles and makes them stronger. Alternately, the Sun salutation brings the mind, body and the breath in harmony and facilitate a complete meditative experience.

If one does only a few rounds of Surya Namaskar, it can be extremely good for the heart. If you intend to do Surya Namaskar as a warm up workout, you may do it at a quicker pace.

Indigenous societies place emphasis on the family and community more than on the individual; their reasons are worth understanding. In this family / community focus, there is no denial of self. In fact, some ancient wise ones instruct: judge thyself.

Living in the System

For a long night of at least 500 or maybe 2,000 years, people have been marginalized by the dominant, patriarchal system without inclusion of their heritage, values ​​and more. A person without heritage is cut off from her roots. As a rootless being, she experiences doubt, fear, anger, loss and depression. In addition, groups subjected to marginalisation carry the heavy burden of oppressive systems which may result in trauma ongoing stress, mental health challenges and physical ailments.

The absence of accurate information, the mis-education around world history in general and African history in particular, is perpetuated by the dominant group. In a game of declaration of superiority, the dominant group ensures that everyone is fed inaccurate information that keeps the wheels running smoothly as it creates privilege in social institutions for its own group.

Those not of the dominant culture are labeled "other" and include people from racialized communities, Indigenous people, older adults, women and people with disabilities. The impact of the 'youth game' is even more troubling because youth are particularly ready for truth and change.

How can the individual who is not in the dominant group adequately care for her body and mind in order to thrive and not just survive? Philosophies and technologies meant to transform the person into a divine being also effectively repair damaged states of mind and body during the process. Yes, these are the spirit-mind-body disciplines of transformation or yoga. Yoga finds its way into lives and brings relief. It has become a strategy for survival. It is proven that the techniques balance the nervous system, enhance breathing and reduce stress. A practitioner of yoga will also learn to focus her mind.

More questions to reflect upon:

  • Is stress reduction enough to end the negative impact of daily micro-aggressions?
  • What benefit might there be in knowing the hidden legacy of one's ancestry?
  • Are you living up to what a divine being is capable of: a being filled with the highest virtue and wisdom?
  • Are you following the highest code of behavior given by the ancient systems of transformation or yoga?

Who are you?

Yoga propositions that the cause of suffering is misidentification of self; thinking you are someone or something you are not. That raises the critical question: who are you? And even, where are you from? Some respond, I am a spiritual being having a physical experience. This reply can be a double-edged sword.

Identifying with things of the mind and spirit can be problematic for someone who, for whatever reason, has little or no interest in her body or her heritage. By discounting the body and all things connected to it, the yoga practitioner may, like a new convert, embrace a new identity as a "yogi" and overlook her heritage, culture, and history.

The philosophy of yoga reminds us that the journey to mind mastery is long and requires patience, practice and perseverance. In the end there is freedom from suffering.
